    Hello all,

This summer me and a few of my friends have been toying with the idea of driving down to portugul.. stopping off in france for one night on the way down and spain one night on the way down and then again likewise on the way back up.. with the hope of spending 3 or 4 days in portugul.. we went last year 8 of us, but we flew.. so this summer we thought we should rent out 2, 7 seater people carriers and drive down... were all aged between 25 and 35 so whats the story with renting, cars at our ages.. the two main drivers are me and one of my mates.. im 30, and he is 34 both full licences.. basiclly what im after is advise as to what kinds of documentation we need.. what are the common problems people run into traveling through different countries... im sure i will have Lots more questions before the summer, but the sooner i ask them the sonner we can get planning...

here is a map of the kinda route we will be taking.. again if anyone knows of any hostles in france or spain on that route or close too it.. let me know.. but thats all stuff that can be worked out at a later date

I've driven around Europe a fair bit (well been a passenger in my parents car) the only info I have that might help is that the road tolls in France are quite high. We drove from Austria to Calais last Summer and drove up through Germany and over to avoid the tolls. Just warning you to budget for that.

Where do you want to rent the car from?

Unless you really want to see England why not fly to France and drive from there?

Would it be possible and easier to drive down and fly back?

www.viamichelin.com or www.mappy.com will give you all the info you'll need about tolls with the Michelin suggesting that the France/Portugal part will cost :

    Costs 227.34 EUR
    Toll costs: 61.05 EUR
    Petrol costs: 166.29 EUR

Time: 17h33 including 15h58 on motorways
Distance: 1835km including 1735km on motorways
    and 10km on scenic roads

But that's just boring Moterways. Take the National roads in France for free and many are as good as out dual-carriageways.

Or it suggests a senic route giving you :

    Time and distance
Time: 26h31 including 05h32 on motorways
Distance: 1884km including 552km on motorways
    and 335km on scenic roads

    Costs 239.31 EUR
    Toll costs: 13.70 EUR
    Petrol costs: 225.61
