Can someone please advise on a problem that a friend of mine is having. Recently his PC which is running with Avast is promting that an infection has occured. The message relates to the following Trojan

    Win32:tratBHO (trj)

Option that he has tried is to delete and or quarantine but despite doing this the prompt regarding the Trojan is still appearing. His knowledge of PC's is quite basic hence the reason he mentioned to me. Whilst I would know a bit more I'm the first to admit that this area is something of a mystery. Therefore having received assistance in the past on this forum I would like to see if anyone can offer advice regarding the removal of this.

Restart in Safe Mode and rescan with your Anti-Virus program. Then try remove it.

    Do this

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
    • Close all other windows before proceeding.
    • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
    • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
    • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

    Hello ASJ,

Thanks for responding. Because this involves my Friends PC I will not have access all the time due to work constraints with both myself and the friend. I will do my upmost to respond in a timely fashion as I know you will be able to resolve this issue ( you helped me in the past and I've no issues since, Thanks again..:) ) I should be able to get access to the PC later tonight and will commence following your instructions at that time. I appreciate your patience on this matter.

    Regards

    Mark

Please advise at your convenience. I will be at work for the next three nights but will be keeping an eye on the forum. Any further activity will have to wait till Monday. Thanks again for your help and patience :)

    Hello

Download ComboFix from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop. Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

    We are nearly done actually

    1. Close any open browsers.

    2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\ddcbcbb]

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

    CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
    • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
    • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
    • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
    • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
    • Click the Scanning Control tab.
    • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
      • Close browsers before scanning.
      • Scan for tracking cookies.
      • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
    • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
    • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
    • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
    • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
    • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
    • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
    • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
    • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
    • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
    • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
      • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
      • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
      • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
      • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
    • Click Close to exit the program.

In regards to the PC running. It certainly appears to be running smoother and the Trojan warning alert has not appeared since this morning. :)

    Thanks for the help :D

    Few things to do
    • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
    • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
    • Click on the CleanUp! button
    • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
    • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
    • Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
    • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

    * Click Start > Control Panel.
    * Click Add/Remove Programs.
    * Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
    * Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
    here

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

    cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

    * Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

    * To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
    SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

    * SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

    Make Internet Explorer more secure
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Click Reset all zones to default level
    • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    * MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

    * Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
    Here

    * Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
    Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

    Hello ASJ,

Followed all your instructions........Thanks for all the help in resolving the issues with the PC. It certainly is running that bit smoother (given its age and spec)and there have been no warning alerts popping up in regards to the Trojan which initially prompted my post.

As said this PC belonged to a friend who is only new to the world of computers and he would not be too computer literate when is comes to these matters. Having said that he was surprised at the level of work that was required to clean the PC.:eek:He understands now just how important it is to keep a close eye on what happens in future. That awareness coupled with a methodical housekeeping program will help in keeping the PC clean and secure.

Once again thanks for your help and patience is sorting this out. :):):)

    Hello ASJ,

I may have another issue for you to review if you can spare the time. This time it concerns an old PC that my kids have been using. If you're ok with this let me know and I will post a HiJackThis log in a new thread.

The problem is that when running an scan with NOD32 a number of infections were found and multiple Trojans were reported.

Some names mentioned as as follows......

    Rbot trojan
    Injector.H trojan
    Agent trojan
    Sniffer.wpePro.A trojan

You may like a challange :o but if you cannot spare the time don't worry. The PC is old and I'm warned the kids before about this before. But obviously curiosity got the better of them it would seem.

Thanks again for your help. :)

    Mark

Sure I am happy to help, maybe keep it in this thread ?
    You may like a challange
    I certainly do :)

Post a HijackThis log from it and we will get started

    Hello again.........

Thanks for that ...... I'm in work on days but things are quite at the moment so I may be taking a few days holidays. If so I will be back home tonight and have a few clear days ahead and will start posting the details. I did run a few scans last night and did some cleanup on the PC but my knowledge would be limited. No doubt issues remain in the PC which would need more expertise than I've got.

The crux of the problem lies with my 13 year son who has been downloading game related software, which has obviously exposed the PC to dodgy sites. The main protection on the PC is NOD32 along with SpyBot and Ad-Aware 2007, however neither SpyBot or Ad-Aware 2007 had been updated and ran in the previous month.

    Apologies for being a pain..........:(

Any advice on what issues are on the PC would be appreciated. The PC in general appears to run ok but its when I ran the scan with NOD32 and the Trojan infection alerts popped up thats when I became concerned.

    Regards

    Mark

    Hello

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Much of our fix will be done in Safe mode, and you will be unable to access this thread at that time. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
    • Choose your usual account.
    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
    • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

Also post a new DSS log

    Hello

    1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

    2. Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
    • Save it to your desktop.
    • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
    • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
      C:\Documents and Settings\Thomas\Application Data\winHost
      C:\Documents and Settings\Thomas\Application Data\winHost.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\winHost
      C:\WINDOWS\File.exe

    • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
    • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
      purity

    • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List Of Files/Patterns To Search For and Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Click the red Moveit! button.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
    • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

    Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
    • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
      http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
    • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
    • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

Now we need to fix your problems by making a .reg file. Copy the code below into a Notepad file. Name the file as fix.reg, change the "Save as Type" to "All files" and save it on the desktop.
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\active setup\installed components\{038E287C-B6AD-C6D2-0502-060307040403}]

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{038E287C-B6AD-C6D2-0502-060307040403}]

Then double click on the fix.reg file, when it prompts to merge click "Yes".

Anyway back to the PC, here is the report from the Kaspersky Online scan. It has found some infections as expected. :(

I normally wouldn't use this PC much as it belongs to the kids. I does appear to be running not too bad but does have it slow moments.

I await your feedback and direction. :)

        Thanks

Your logs are clean ! We need to do a few things

You can delete the tools that we used
        • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.

        * Click Add/Remove Programs.

        Hello ASJ,

I have followed your instructions as directed. Thanks for all the help (again):o

Before I go can I asked you for an opinion on Spybot. Is this a program that is worth having on the PC. Durning the cleaning process I have installed the additional programs like Spywareguard and SpyWare Blaster. Does SpyBot do a good job or will it conflict with the additional SpyWare programs.

        ???????

        Once again many thanks..........

Spybot wont conflict with the other programs as long as you don't have TeaTimer running

Personally I would remove it and replace it with SUPERAntiSpyware.

Let me know if you got any more questions
