Muddy garden

After reading past threads on overcoming muddy/waterlogged gardens I am going to have a go at aerating it with a hollow tube and then spreading some sand on it, as suggested. Garden is not flooded, just muddy in places with little or no grass.

Main problem is that I have 2 Westies and I was wondering, will the grass ever be lawn material? Or will the dogs just keep making a mess of it?

Any other advice, like what kind of grass to use in reseeding, would be great?
