Can any one explain how it is determinded to be a K.O or a T.K.O.
In several matches ive seen a competitor has been knocked out, the ref steps in and the fight is over but for no apperant reason some are called as K.O's and others T.K.O's/Ref stoppages. why is this?

My understanding is that if the ref stops it or there's a retirement (towel thrown in, etc.) it's a TKO, otherwise it's a KO. Not sure if this is 100% correct, but it's much of a muchness. The ref stepping in implies that it would have happened anyway.

A knockout (also referred to as a K.O.) is a winning criterion in several full-contact combat sports, such as boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, mixed martial arts and others sports involving striking. A knockout is usually awarded when one participant is unable to rise from the canvas within a specified period of time, typically because of fatigue, injury (serious or temporarily incapacitating, e.g. a bleeding cut above the eye can blind a fighter), loss of balance, or unconsciousness. A technical knockout (also referred to as a T.K.O.) is often declared when the referee or other judges (such as official ring physician, the fighter himself, or the fighter's cornermen) decide that a fighter cannot continue the match, even though he did not fail the count.[1] British records refer to TKOs as either "retired", if the fighter refuses to continue, or "R.S.F.", for Referee - Wikipedia.

I'm not sure if there can be any modifications to the rules implemented to actual fight.

A k'o is when you dont beat the count in boxing or are out cold, a tko is when the ref stops the fight due to been down a number of times or lack of defense etc..in mma any stoppage bar been out is a tko or submission if you tap out..corrections welcome but this is my take on it..

Thanx for the explanations and i should have clarified, im talkin about mma.
I cant name specific fights but i've seen varied calls for both standing and ground strike based finishes.

In MMA, a KO is where the person was actually knocked unconscious.

A TKO is where the referee stops the fight due to someone not defending themselves intelligently, being injured etc.

Thanx clive, i understand the basic ruling of each in theory but never seem to be able to distinguise between the two in practice.
so would i be correct in assumingthe following:
If you continue to punch a guy who's out until the ref stops you its a tko but knock him out and stand back in the knowledge he aint getting up and its a ko!?!

If he's out its a ko. if not tko
