A little news passed my desk to day, The traders on moore street have or are soon been to given notice to vacate the street. A great street for photos could be lost soon. Must head down that way this week before its lost to us.

That's a sad thing to hear. I think that Moore St is a fairly unique place in the city centre and it'll be sad to see it quiet.

It's a place that always seems to vibrant that I've wanted to take pictures there. But I always felt that it'd be rude to or I felt too shy to ask them if it was ok.

Aye, they've been on the way out for a while now. Shot a good few frames that direction last year. Shame.

Where are all the traders going to go? Does anybody else feel that Dublin is really cheapening up? What about those silly thingys on O'Connell street with the people walking. Aesthetically, it's really not nice.

Maybe Moore St. has already lost its identity with fewer and fewer indigenous Irish traders there? For instance there are only 2 fish ladies left there, there used to be about 8 or 10 when I was a kid. As regards Irish owned shops, I don't think there are many left there.

I heard it had a lot to do with the 5 axle ban - trucks not coming into the city centre so can't supply the wholesalers around smithfield, which is where most of the traders got their fare. Apparently..

Can't say I'd buy fish off a stall, but it'll be sad to see them go alright.

Being of the younger generation, the foreign amongst Irish traders are how I identify it and is why I love it.

The City council have had a plan to close the markets in smithfield for years. They've already moved the fish market, and they're moving the fruit market too. AFAIK it's out to the Naas Road, but I could be wrong. Building more apartments and shops I believe.

They've also had a plan to redevelop the "Carlton Cinema site" which somehow became the entire block the length of Moore Street.

At least we may keep No. 16 as an intact building, so hopefully that will stop them ploughing down half the north city centre to build more shopping centres.

BTW don't forget that the entire Arnotts block from Henry St to Abbey St is closing too for 'redevelopment'.

Sorry, a bit off-topic perhaps. I'd love to see some shots of the area by thebaz.

    Really??? I din't know that.

And the entire GPO area I hear? Though obviously the feckers will (hopefully at least!) have to keep the facade intact.

No doubt it'll all be a beautiful Starbucks..

    Mumble grumble...

The ban on 5+ axle trucks doesn't apply to trucks who are going to an address within the area and have no other option. The trucks still go to the Fruit and Veg market. The ban is mainly to prevent trucks going through the city to get to and from Dublin port.

    1) Complete tosh, I deal with the markets.
    2) While I am a veggie you'd be surprised at which fish would be the "safest" from a dealer or a food establishment. ;)

I live around the corner from Moore street and obviously know that woman to see!
Fantastic pictures esp the daytime one, you can see so much detail in it and the shine on the apples!

I was talking to one of the fish ventors the other day about this and she was telling me that the whole place is due for renovation. It will be sad to see it go though, my parents used to bring me to moore street when i was a kid and it was a lot more vivid than it has been for the last few years. they should have kept it as a dublin landmark instead of ruining it with some character-less new development.,

Magicbastarder, Source extremely reliable in council. Talks have been ongoing for a while. "Its now bite the bullet time"

A small bit more of what makes Dublin great been removed.

I remember getting fruit there... hadn't gone in a few years now though.

Got to wonder if this kid will ever get to follow in her granny's/mother's footsteps...

It'd be sad to see it go - not just from a photographic point of view, but it was a vibrant part of Dublin for so long.
