Dodgy Piaggio Fly Scooter

    I bought a Piaggio Fly 100cc scooter in September and have had recurrent problems with it. The most consistent problem is that in the first few miles (anything up to 8 miles) of my journey the bike can cut out when idling or, in the first mile or two, cut out when slowing down at lights or a stop sign. The bike has an automatic choke. The bike shop tells me that it is normal for a bike with an automatic choke to cut out in the first 4 to 5 miles. I previously had a Susuki Katana and a Honda Lead (but still no nothing about bikes) and neither of these ever cut out at any point during a journey. Can anyone tell me authoritatively if a bike with an automatic choke should cut out at any point during a journey?

    hi Darragh, I had the same problem with a piaggio hexagon, the bike shop where I bought it replaced the carb saying it was a carb problem, anyway the problem persisted so I ended up replacing the fuel filter myself and never had a problem after that, it turned out the scooter had a fuel starvation problem because of the crap filter piaggio had fitted to it. Automatic chokes should not cause your scooter to cut out.

    I would be grateful for any other views as well, would like to be in a strong position to rebut any argument from the bike shop that it is normal for scooters with automatic chokes to cut out.

    What feckin bike shop are you goin to, no scooter or motorbike should ever cut out unless there is a problem. Nearly all scooters have an automatic choke. Do you see loads of scooters cutting out every morning when people have just started driving them, no, those guys sound like cowboys.

    It's the biggest bike shop in Dublin. Am also having other problems. It's pot luck whether or not the bike starts in the morning. Was very cold yesterday morning and the bike wouldn't start. Started this morning though. But I don't think it's necessarily whether or not it is cold in the morning as for a full 10 day period about 2 weeks ago it wouldn't start morning or evening. Bike shop has said they cannot find any problem with the bike and that I just don't know how to start it properly. Funny how I know how to start it properly one morning but not the next and funny how I always managed to start my 2 previous bikes. Am getting no satisfaction from the bike shop so taking action against them.

    If its the biggest big shop in Dublin on the Naas Road then they are cowboys. Their reputation precedes them.

    I was going to say carb icing, but that only happens after you start the bike.

    So it really sounds like a fuel flow or choke problem - auto choke is set wrong or fuel filter is restricting flow too much. Or the carb float level is too low.

    In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.
