You can "subscribe" to threads, choosing email alerts, or no notifications.

At the top of the page, just above your first post in this case, is a little drop down menu entitled "Thread Tools". Click the little arrow next to the title and choose "Subscribe to this thread" option, and Bob's your uncle

When you subscribe to an entire forum, a list of those forums appears at the very top of your navigation screen, under the menu "Subbed"
