Office 2008

I've just bought Office 2008 for Mac, since Microsoft brought the price down to something I could afford.

Unfortunately, I got what I paid for, and Word crashes on startup every time, and goes into a cycle of crashes and restarts.

I have to write a piece that's due tomorrow - half of it's written, in the old Word, which I've now trashed.

Is there anything I can do? Is this a known issue?

i just bought office and am expecting it delivered tomorrow or wednesday.

Tried neo office, was not a fan of it. it's grand. But i remember my windows days running office and i loved it.

I got office cause i just bought a mac book and i reckon office would be better.

stupid question ---- the iWork 08 i bought can be put onto a 2nd computer, i know office can.

i know, neo office isn't to my liking either, but that being said it will get him/her out of a hole until he/she can fix his/her copy of office.

Thanks - will Neo Office open the first half of the piece, which I wrote earlier in the week?

It should do if it was saved as the generic Word.doc.

I have a review copy of Office for Mac 08' and have found it very crash prone on my laptop (c2d base model macbook with 2GB RAM), but it runs very smoothly and nicely on my iMac. I'm not sure yet what's causing this but when I have more time with it I'll report back.

Apparently there are huge problems with it - look at this MacFixIt page:

I'm installing NeoOffice and using that, and will call Apple tech support - I bought the software from Apple - later. Maybe they can help. Or tell me where to find help.

NeoOffice's website has terrifying warnings about the possibility of it disabling the computer if you're running Leopard...

Rang Apple to get my money back and they suggested ringing Microsoft help first. So I got some help from someone in Nova Scotia - but in fact it installed without trouble after the computer had been off all night.

    I don't like it, though - don't see how it's an improvement.

    * The toolbars all disappear (except for the annoying Formatting square) when you close a document.

    * There are no more macros - I have to try to remake my useful Word Count toolbar button, Clear Formatting keyboard shortcut, and Email macro (getting rid of email line endings and extra pars in imported text) using, bleaghh, AppleScript.

    * I can't see any way to have templates for commonly used documents in the Work submenu, which seems to have disappeared. I used these 99.9% of the time I opened a new document. (Oh, wait, the Work menu is still there, they've just moved it. I take that one back.)

Unless anyone else knows different, I'd say save your money - Microsoft seem to have decided "If it ain't broke, make it more complicated and ask for more money".

Yeah, I have to send pieces all over the place to people with various levels of PC, and in general Word is a program I like(d), so it's handy for me to use.

I now have to face what happens when I upgrade from my current PowerPC chip to a new machine running Leopard; apparently it doesn't like Leopard.

*So* annoying that they've got rid of the ability to record macros.
