Could it be any significance that today is meant to be the unhappiest day of the year...?

Clearly that is tosh of the highest order, today is the happiest of the year so far. Practically delirious in fact.

What % of the population (4.2 million) was online at 16.54?

A better question is what percentage of people who were *capable* of being here, were here. Whats the installed base of internet connections in Ireland again?

The servers (plural :) ) seem to be coping very nicely, I dont think we are pushing the limits yet. We know we are at the limit when that number ceases to rise regularly... we were stuck at 2k for a long time while the servers were overloaded.

Now we have a *collection* of hamsters!

Welsh psychologist Cliff Arnall would disagree with you on that Mike,he even has a formula worked out.;)
The formula is [W+(D-d)] x T divided by MxNA, according to Mr Arnall, who specialises in confidence and happiness.

    re Dub13

Oh I'm aware of the formula (I blogged about it elsewhere today) but if over 3,000 people were on boards at one moment + the thousands who dipped in at any point, then clearly happiness was in the accendancy ;)

    http://www.internetworldstats.com/eu/ie.htm
(out of date) says that there is 2,060,000 Internet users in Ireland

Which would Work out ( Very roughly)
That 1.5% of all internet users in ireland were on boards @ 16:54pm

    Not bad!

Fair point. :) Have the admins got the list of most users down the years?

We're easily into Terrabytes a month at the moment.

Two million Internet users in Ireland?!? Thats a joke! Christ, I doubt there are 2M computers with a modem/wireless installed in the country myself.

2M would be half the population!

As for the weekends, we pretty much consistently have done about half the traffic on the weekends as on the weekdays (you bunch of slackers!).
I'll check the details now and see if that has changed.

    DeV.

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

our Visits per Day has risen to about 70K at the moment (as defined by Google) and on the weekends its about 45-50k.

I was wrong before, it has been running at about 2/3rds of the weekday average and so it doesnt seem signifcantly up but it is up from last year.

Maybe the weekend posters are just more active and posting more often so that would mean we are both right...;)

In the last 30 days we did around 2.4 TB in and 14.2 TB out
Average outbound of around 8MB/s and about 2MB/s in.

Those are pretty rough figures, I could come up with better but tis time for fewd!

Have the BW stats increased by much since the server upgrade?

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

The visitor stats have rocketed. Before, we would crawl to a stop at about 2200 users. Now with the new 5 server rig and 2 database servers we can handle 3100 without breaking a sweat by the looks of it.

Given the growth of the site in recent times, would it be possible somehow to contact previous or stale posters via email to get some feedback on why they no longer post here etc?

While the survey done last year (or thereabouts) provided useful information on those of us who are active, it would probably be even more useful to have feedback from users who dont post that often anymore or at all anymore?

I'm sure there are a bunch of people who hate our guts. I'm sure if we contacted all the people who dont post here any more I'm sure we'd get a right earful...

I dont think thats a particularly useful earful either. Many of them were weeded out because they simply dont play well with others and can't co-habitate on our little island on the internet.

    Site performance (seems fixed now)
    Signal/noise ratio
    Size

I'd go into the whole village/city comparison but theres no point as boards works very well and its an empty argument:)

Sorry, you are probably right Dusty, by no means would that cover everyone who doesnt post here. There are people who didnt like the direction we took the site, or who just got bored or who didnt have time or who didnt agree with mod/admin decisions its true. We both know people from the gaming era who dont use this site as much as before or at all!

I sometimes worry about those people but honestly I dont think you can keep all the people happy all the time and while I used to try to do that, I found I was just killing myself over every little row and argument.

Ultimately we just try to struggle on and in the end I have realised that so long as I am comfortable about how things are here and where we are going, thats most of what I can do.

There was a time when I could have controlled all of Boards and everyone knew me, now I find it hard to even be heard let alone have my decisions on "direction" make impact.

    DeV.
