Tracking down an old Registration

Hey folks, a possibly odd question, but here goes.. Say you were in possession of a couple of classics, from the 1950's or even earlier. You know what they are  and you know the name/address of the last registered owner and the possibility that one of them was taxed until the mid 1970's. However, there are no registration documents surviving and the owner (1 owner from new) doesn't remember the registrations. No photos etc exist showing any registration marks.
Do ye think it may be possible to track down the reg numbers using make/model and name/address of the original/last owner?

You could write to your local motor tax office (to an authorised officer) and send all the details you have... last owner details, make, model, chassis number, colour, etc.

They may be able to track down the original reg number for you.

The owner may not remember the numbers, but others might, especially if the cars were in a rural area. I grew up in the 50s and could still tell you the reg numbers of the relatively few cars that were in the area then.

Thanks for the suggestions. i was kind of thinking along the same lines. I suppose the question I was really asking is "Do county councils retain records of all vehicles ever registered in their area?" Something tells me that it's a tall order, but you never know.
BTW, the classics in question are both owned by my father and both are (at risk of getting booted out of the classic cars forum!) tractors.
    One is a Nuffield 460 http://www.tractordata.co.uk/nuffield/pages/nuffield_460/index.htm

The other is a grey Fergie 35

He has owned both from new and both need extensive work to be done, but neither is beyond economic repair. It would be nice to have them back in action with their original registration numbers, rather than going for ZV's
