Does anyone know why we dont field a team in the sevens tournaments? I realise it would be fairly expensive but surely it would be a good chance for younger players to get international exposure and supplement their running skills?

Answered your own question really :)

I believe that Wales have concentrated on their 7s team for development purposes but at the expense of not fielding an 'A' side anymore. If you have to choose one over the other on cost grounds, the I think the Irish approach of fielding an 'A' side and having no 7's side is a much better choice. While 7's is good for develping ball handling skills apart from that the game really bears no resembelance to the 15 man game.

As you alluded to its the money. As things stand the 6 Nations A has been reduced to just us, England and Italy I think. Which is a shame, I quite like A games (and enjoy watching the Churchill Cup).
