Was in Aldi yesterday and nearly fell over when I saw they were selling Spaten Hellas. This in my honest opinion is one of the best beer's available here in Ireland. There are nicer hellas beers out there but they will only be found in Bavaria. Now my local off licence sometimes sells Spaten but they sell it at €2.50.Aldi are selling it for the bargain price of €1.78.This is an incredible cheap price for such a good quality beer when you consider the price of sh*t beers like Budwiser and Carslberg. On top of the Spaten they are also selling a weissbeer; Schofferhofer Hefeweizen for the same price €1.78.
My local off license also sells this for €2.70.Its not as nice as Franziskaner weissbeer but it is nicer than Erdinger.

Aldi can be funny that way. A few years ago they did the gorgeous Bateman's XXXB for €1.99 when it was going for €3.75 in specialist beer off licences (well, Redmond's).

Cheers for the heads-up on the Spaten. It's lovely all right.

no pics but it definitely did happen .

in fact i think the actual price was 1.49€( 1 € off normal retail )

It was the naturtrub hefe-weissbier variety .

I was torn between that offer and another offer they had which was 2 50cl bottles of Krusovice ( joint favourite Czech beer with Staropramen ) for 4€

    proust!

spaten for rag week...times have changed :D....in my day it was £2 flagons of dry orchard cider...i still shudder at the thoughts of it

with the price spaten and now paulaner are going for i'd be a fool not to stock up.
    think of it this way : 6 for 7 = bavaria, 6 for 9 = paulaner.
    worth 2 quid extra? Yes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,715 ✭✭✭Gryzor

damn right....at least for the moment, we can can get decent german beer at non-rip off prices...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,921 ✭✭✭munchkin_utd

non rip off is definitely a relative thing!!
As a comparison my local German supermarket has a deal for 10 * 0.5L Staropramens for 5.50. Thats 55c a bottle for staropramen!

Or for Spaten, hows about TWENTY half litre bottles for a tenner? 50c a bottle!!!!

Dont believe me - then check out the offers page of the off licence:
    http://www.orterer.de/orterer/angebote.php

those kind of prices would bring a tear to your eye alright... also, u probobly get 2 or 3 euro back when you return the bottles???....at least thats the way it was when i was in munich

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,921 ✭✭✭munchkin_utd

The deposit on the bottles is on top of that again, 7c a bottle, so for a crate its 1.40 for the bottle plus 2 or so for the crate itself.

Still and all its disgraceful how much markup is being taken on the beer in Ireland. Where is the 300% difference in price coming from?

And better, if Paulaner comes half way across europe and costs 1.50 a bottle, how come irish brewed Heineken muck costs something similar and it only has to travel from cork, with no ferries or anything like that involved.
Someone is pullin the piss somewhere.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Where is the 300% difference in price coming from?
You're looking at a 130% of German VAT and over 1000% of the excise duty.
how come irish brewed Heineken muck costs something similar and it only has to travel from cork
Partly because rugby tournaments and other events are expensive to sponsor, but mainly because people will pay it.

Last time I was in oddbins blackrock 24x330ml staropramen was €27 possibly 26.

You are paying a fortune for all that advertising, just like why ipods cost so much relative to others.

When I was in germany and holland bulmers costed more in the offies than here, in the pub it was actually cheaper! the barman was apologising when he told me what it cost, and couldnt believe it costed more in Ireland.

I was in Aldi yesterday in Ashbourne and there seems to be no shortage of Spaten or Schofferhofer, they has case loads of the stuff.Hopefully they will
be selling both beers indefinitely and its not just some sort of once off promotion. Lidl were selling small cases of Becks for a while but it was only a short term promotion as they're not selling it anymore.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,484 ✭✭✭JIZZLORD

aye, aldi in galway has heaps of glorious spaten

Is this Spaten helles similar to Augustiner Helles (which is *my* favourite)?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Yeah, the Munich lagers are all pretty similar to each other across the brands.

It's similar to Augustiner Helles but its definitely not as nice but compared to most bland tasteless larger's here in Ireland its the don perignon of beers.
If you like Augustiner Helles and are ever in Bavaria again try looking for Zirndorfer Helles which is even tastier than Augustiner Helles if you think that's possible.

    staropramen 50cls 3 for €5

    paulaner 50cl 2 for €4

Supervalu sell Staropramen for €2.50 a bottle. It was €2 a bottle before xmas. Rip off.

Anybody know if any of the Aldi's in Dublin are still selling Spaten?
I normally stop in Aldi in Santry on Friday after work and buy a few bottles
of Spaten. Two weeks ago they only had one box left and last Friday much
to my disappointment they had none left.:(

As long as InBev continue to supply it at the severely undercut prices that Aldi are doubtless paying them for it. They made a huge mistake by allowing Stella to be sold cheaply and nearly destroyed the brand in the UK in the process. They may not be so keen for Spaten to be regarded as a low-cost beer outside Germany.

Well 1.78 aint that cheap. The stella they sell here in ireland could not be considered a 'quality' beer be any means. God knows I have drunk enough of the stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,715 ✭✭✭Gryzor

when u put it beside the other imported german beers it might "look" cheap at €1.78....but then the germans would laugh at us paying even that price for it....

    kmick wrote: »

Indeed. But the quality of the product has nothing to do with the brand strength of mass-produced lagers. It's all about how it looks and how much it costs. Smoke, mirrors, but no flavours. Flavours upset people.

Redmond's, for instance, no longer sells Budvar in cans. The very presence of the cans was adversely affecting bottle sales of the same beer. Totally irrational, but it shows that it's all about brand perception.
    Gryzor wrote:

Yes, but Aldi don't get to keep all of the €1.78. They're still buying it cheap and passing the saving on, punitive tax regime notwithstanding. For the purposes of the Irish market, half a litre of lager at under €2 is cheap beer.

Yeah but we live in ireland not germany. We would laugh at them for not crossing the road on a red man when there is no trafffic coming.

i was only making a point about the massive differance in price of the same product in the 2 countries, not the culture of the country.....

True, i also supose places like Germany and Czech Republic still some what hold a view of beer as liquid bread or as a part of your food intake. So there maybe less tolerance in paying inflated prices prices for a local product?

eh, this doesn't quite count in the quality german beer stakes but has anyone tasted this before
    http://www.aldi.ie/ie/html/offers/58_5609.htm
Schofferhofer with Grapefruit? Only 2.5%, probably not my kind of brew but could be worth a punt at a fiver for a 6-pack

Looks disgusting to be honest - it's probably part lager part grapefruit juice.

Well, it's a weissbier not a lager, but I can't imagine how else they'd make it other than by mixing the beer with the fruit juice, what with Germany's laws on beer ingredients.

I wonder does it say on the label "Brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot, then adulterated"?

From their website it looks like it's designed for kiddies who would otherwise be on the alcopops.

"Weizenbier aus der Flasche? Kein Problem."
    *shudder*

Still gonna get some. How bad can it be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,381 ✭✭✭oblivious

Schofferhofer fruit weissbier are very popular in Germany, actual as far as i saw most weissbier breweries all have a range

Also in bars you can get fruit puree/syrup shot in the weissbier, the strangest had was banana puree in a wheat beer interesting, one is enough and certainly not something to have with a doggy stomach

I didn't say I was going to drop everything and run to buy it, then quaff the lot :) (though it has been known).

Results, in time, will be posted in the usual place.

It's actually really nice, but then I'm currently drinking it in the sunshine. I wouldn't recommend it at any other time.

It tastes a lot like Lilt.

Hey, what's with the Spaten Hellas? I picked up some Spaten in Aldi, quite sweet beer, nice. But wondering is the Hellas tag any different? Doesn't say that anywhere on the bottle. Excuse my ignorance.
