Are there as many bachelors today as there was say thirty years ago?

I think it's always pretty much taken for granted that if a man is married and it isn't to a woman there is a presumption of gayness.

A serious answer would be yes there are more bachelors as there is a high population and low marriage rate in Ireland see above for all the none serious answers.

"Bachelor" has particular connotations in this country - rural guy, still living with his father, first in line for the farm etc. I presume there aren't as many of those around today as there were in the 1950s (could be wrong) but there are probably more single men today because people got settled down younger back in the day.

well seeing as more and more people are seperating i'd reckon theres MORE bachelors than 30yrs ago. the real news though is theres WAY more spinsters. its a buyers market now for blokes as the girls out number us.

No, you can only split the lad 12 ways so many times before there's no land left to share. Now the favorite son gets the land and lives the high life driving his big fancy 4 be 4 to and from markets, awash with cattle and the like. They make me sick.

More people too, though I suppose the question is really be what % of men are unmarried.

People get married later in life now, and some wont bother at all. I am surprised at the number of mates who do get married. esp. with the separation/divorce these days. I would want to live with someone a good 5-10years, but know some getting married after only meeting 1-2 years.

And it takes 2 to tango, just as many "spinsters", weird word that, you sometimes hear bachelor in a good light, like "eddie ervine the jetsetting bachelor", but never spinster, never even heard "eligible spinster".

But I must say I find more females looking for partners than men, so as they outnumber lads it really is a "buyers market" as said.

exactly, nothing to do with saving for a good wedding, just preventing the hassle of a bad divorce.

Do "hot foreign chicks" like to marry soon after meeting people? or somehow opposed to moving in to live with a man? news to me, and I take it the ugly ones do the opposite?

I cannot understand why more people do not live together longer before marrying, very few go on about "living in sin" anymore, there is no real stigma about an unmarried couple raising kids these days.

If you are planning on living together forever what is 5-10years? unless you are planning to cash in of course...

I do not know anyone personally who has divorced, I don't use this data to form an assumption that it is unlikely to happen.

From this years census 1,565,016 are married...1,523,527 are on their first marraige. 59,534 are divorced and a furthur 107,263 are separated.

That would be a 90% success rate. Thems bad odds?

In my mind yeah, didnt know it was so bad! now I think people not living with each other first are even crazier. I wonder how much hassle & heartache would have been saved if they had just moved in first and found out they were incompatible. I bet many more are just suffering each other for the sake of keeping up appearances.

And I cannot understand why anyone would purposefully tie themselves financially or heaven forbid biologically :eek: to someone, without knowing for certain that they were building their lives on solid base.

I'm a catch. If it going to take some fella the best part of a decade to figure that out, decide that he trusts me and probably won't get bored me. Well thanks, but no thanks. I'd rather be Single, focusing my time and energy on myself, and kissing lot of different species of frogs rather than the one dud.

As for foreign women, its a completely groundless theory.
My friends central european gf's seem to be more family orientated, have stronger catholic values, are less materialistic and really love their home and miss their families.
For them to stay in Ireland, I think they would need commitment.

In a great majority of cases, country men (farmers) remain bachelors for fear of sharing their farms/ holdings etc. and as the years roll on they become more stubburn in their ways. Shame really as after they die, invariably the farms go to the state or some distant cousin who never gave a toss about them in the first place.

Or 22 distant and brawling cousins who never gave a ****.
When there is a piece of dirt at stake there is always lots around to have pity on you and keep you company. No matter how cantankerous you are.

Well according to Finola Kennedy in the book Cottage to crèche:

“Until 1980 marriage rates in Ireland were relatively low, and there were huge numbers of bachelors or spinsters. This pattern was due to the legacy of the famine, whereby land was so scarce that only one child could inherit the smallholding in each family; the others had to emigrate, enter religious orders, or remain single. It was also due to economic conditions generally, as nobody got married unless they could afford to.”

wow interesting topic this, in a two mile radius of me there are 8 bachelor farmers rangeing in age from 38-65. there were ten up to a few years ago but these two men met women and had children at age 38 and 47 respectivley. Im just wondering when does one reach bachelor age? when do u go from being a single guy to a bachelor? im 32 and part time farming, im single or am i a bachelor? i suppose i will have to include myself among these 8 men now, is this a very high rate for a two mile radius? i have been getting suspicous looks lately as to my sexual preference because i havent been ever in a relationship with a girl, i think this is quite unfair, i never imagined people would ever even think this way, i wonder why people think this? its usually people who are married or settled with a partner, its very rare that a single person asks me if im single or not?
