    Read here!

To summarise, there's a college professor in Carnegie-Mellon who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and gave his quite touching final speech to his class recently.

It got some media coverage and in the States. He's a big self-confessed huge fan of 'Star Trek' and JJ Abrams heard this and offered him a small part in the movie (due out in December).

Oh and watch his lecture at TED embedded at AintItCoolNews above. A fantastic speaker and very funny guy!

What a conveniently nice piece of publicity :)

D'ya honestly think he needs publicity this far in advance of release of the film, and it's a 'Star Trek' film (no publicity needed) and also he e-mailed the college professor assumedly unaware he'd make it public knowledge..

    .. bit cynical ain't ya!

Just a wee bit, yeah. Though, depending on my mood, I sometimes prefer to call it realistic.

But he said he can't find a way to get Shatner in...

I'm sure it was ment as a nice gesture but you can't help but feel that it's early marketing. Funy how this story is released the same weekend the teaser is premiered.

I know for a fact that Abrams purposely gave the professor cancer just for marketing reasons. He's actually Hollywood's most evil guy!

    Bill Hicks would approve.

Nice to see his suggestion re special effects is finally being implimented.

    What fact?

Incredible lecture by Prof Randy Pausch. Truely inspiring stuff. Obvisouly JJ abram was moved by the video and had it in his capacity to fulfill the professors dream as he had done for so many others.

He also got to fulfill his dream of playing in the NFL recently too, well not quite. Trained with the Pittsburgh Steelers for a day during their regular practice.

The snide cynical comments are a bit distasteful.

Shatner having a cameo would feel forced unless it was done exceptionally well. Shoving in some, essentially, randomer is easy.

The fact that he did it, and it's on the interweb and therefore is true. QED.

Christ I don't want Shatner in. The shoehorned him into Generations already is that not enough. Kirk's dead, no he's not, yes he is, no he's not - it'd be like a fecking panto
