A friend of mine says he has terrible reception on GSM in his house but if he switches to Edge he has no problem getting a signal. Just wondering can you do this on the 3 network.

You friend is talking b*ll*x!! :-)

GSM, GPRS and EDGE use the same frequencies, if he had poor signal then EDGE would be the worst effected as it's data speed is higher than GPRS

What your friend may be doing, is switching to gsm only on a 3G phone instead of dual mode

It was a blackberry and it had "EDGE" on screen. He generally knows what hes is doing tbh so I wonder why it works then. His iPod touch also has difficulty picking up the WiFi router too. Its an old house so probably has thick walls. I was wondering would it work for another friends house which seems to be in a dead spot for mobiles. But it probably won't work if as you say they are all the same freq. I was also wondering could you get a car kit to use at home and connect via bluetooth while at home. Maybe thats a daft idea.

How does he switch his phone to Edge? I've never seen the option. Generally it's GSM (includes GPRS / Edge) and 3G (UMTS).

No idea. He just said it in passing. I wasn't listening properly as was playing with his iTouch tbh. I'll email him and ask.
