O2 broadband problems

I have been with o2 for the last 3 months and have only been able to get EDGE connections to work. I tried putting the modem onto 3g and found I could get 3 bars and it did connect. The only problem no internet sites could be accessed. See the pic below: If I switch back to EDGE the signal jumps to 5 bars and connects…

If I switch back to EDGE the signal jumps to 5 bars and connects instantly. Any reason why 3G won't work as I have connected successfully to 3g in the past on 2 bars and 1 bar in places like Cork and Limerick?
