ps3 surround sound

I've just bought a new Samsung HD Televeision and i want to be able to watch dvd's in surround sound on it with the playstation 3 . I'm not a very technical person .........:D:p..can anyone adivse me on this?? Is it possible to buy speakers that can be hooked up to the playstaion 3 ?? I have speakers from another home cinema system, but its not from a HD ready dvd player.....does that matter though ???....can they still be hooked up to the PS3 and get good quality sound on it ????

Try asking in the Playstation or home entertainment forums. Thats your best bet for finding the info you want.

I have my PS 3 hooked up to my samsung lcd via a HDMI cable so thats the blu ray hi-def visuals sorted . I also have a sony 500watt surround system thats 4 years old now but I ran an optical cable from this to the ps3 and the sound is excellent. So you don't need to replace any existing sound system to get 5.1 sound out of the ps3 as the ps3 itself provides the hd visuals. BTW you can pick up an optical cable in any electrical store or games shop for about a tenner.

thanks for your help ........I was hoping that there would be a way around it without having to buy an up-to-date system aswell ........my sony home cinema system is bout four years old too ......so i should be able to hook it up to the ps3 via the optical cable yeah?? and that will work?? ...........thanks a million ...........i'll try it out :D

If your Sony system is 4 yrs old, it is unlikely that it has an optical IN port on the rear of the unit.
Anyway here is a pic of what you are looking for:

Optical connections are fairly old at this stage ,I had a surround system about 6 years ago that was entry level ,with optical.

Yup , optical connectors have been around since the early 80's , most hi fi have had them for 20 years or more ,

To clear this up , the PS3 , and every other console , has an audio output , this is usually either digital or analog or both , and needs to be fed to an amp before its fed to speakers , the amp will either decode , and amplify it or both to get it to the speakers ,

Now where a lot of people these days get confused , is that some speaker packages have an amp in the subwoofer , so they dont see an amp just speakers , and think that any speakers will do ,

Likewise with the DVD + speaker surround sets that are very popular at the moment , again , there is an amp in here too, in this case combined with the DVD player , this only happens with these packages , most DVD's do not have an amp.

Just note that in all cases , for it to give you surround off a PS3 it has to have one of the connections that ongarite posted above. If it doesnt , then your out of luck. Anything else other than this , including the red and white supplied with the basic connector , will only give stereo.
