How many gods and bibles has man invented?

Are we talking dozens of different bibles, hundreds? And are there thousands of gods or millions invented over the past thousands of years?

As you wade through all the bibles and gods, are the most successful bibles and gods the ones which have the most ardent church system and history of relentless dogma?

If there is only one god, then the whole thing is a lottery.

As with all translated texts there are different translations. However I must say they do not differ incredibly much.

There are 52 in total I think, some of these are very old translations and have been made more accurate with the use of the Dead Sea Scrolls in literal translations such as the NRSV, and then there are contemporary versions like The Message, and Good News.

You are free to learn Greek and Hebrew and then read from a lexicon if you want to make your own view of the original languages context. I trust the translators really though.

OP I think you mean "holy book" rather than "Bible" (the Bible is the Christian holy book)

And since this thread has little to do with Christianity specifically it probably belongs in Humanities (or if you want to discuss how silly it is to pick one religion over another possibly A&A)

Fair enough. Ask yourself what forum it is in though.

That's pretty interesting, especially considering the massive difference alternative translation and interpretation of only a few words can make.

The levels of faith leaping required in religion is astounding. First you're asked to choose a religion, then you're asked to choose a church, then you're asked to choose a version of the bible, then you're asked to choose an interpretation of the various contentious aspects, then you're asked to choose an emphasis to put on the various aspects etc etc.

At any single decision, you could head down the wrong path.

Not really you have theologically trained pastors / priests to ask and consult with. Knowledgeable leaders to guide you through should you find it necessary.

I hardly think it astounding that God treats us as intelligent beings who can make choices and reason. Most of the decisions you mention (which church to join, which Bible version etc) do not determine whether someone is saved or not, so they just help to make the Christian faith diverse instead of boringly uniform.
