Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) Release CandidatePublished: January 11, 2008

The Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate (RC) is now available to the public. In addition to previously released updates, SP1 contains changes focused on addressing specific reliability and performance issues, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several new technologies. SP1 also addresses some management, deployment, and support challenges

As a non techie, has anyone had issues when they upgrade for the SP1 ? Is there a risk that it will screw up the computer even more !

    Thanks

The way updates work in Vista , and the way Microsoft themselves are playing down the importance of service packs , means that , if you are up to date on your updates so to speak , then you already have most of this.

So in all likelihood , you wont see much difference.

Release candidate means they think it's ready but want lots of guinea pigs to try it out first in case it's another Windows NT4 SP6 that needed to be replaced with SP6A

    From the OP's link
    # Microsoft does not recommend installing this software on primary or mission critical systems.
    # Windows Vista SP1 Release Candidate is time-limited software.
    # Support is through self-help and peer support via the Windows Vista SP1 forum and FAQ page.
    # Additional information about the above items and others.
    ...
Installing the release candidate of SP1 via Windows Update requires a number of additional steps that will not be necessary when the final SP1 is released.

bottom line - if you install this you are on your own

It should be low risk, but if it bugs out you were warned.

As a gerneral rule wait a month or two after the official release if you want to be sure it's totally safe to use.

I might install this in the hope that my vista-certified radeon graphics card actually starts to work with vista. Currently none of the vista drivers for it actually work, despite its certification.

edit: nope still goes to a flickering unreadable bsod if I boot with the driver enabled.
