You can only save Gamecube game data on a Gamecube memory card (slot in the hatch at the side beside the cube controller ports). Game are selling 128 MB Cube memory cards, (branded for Wii and Game Cube) for €30 - I thought it was a tad on the expensive side.

You can use any normal sized SD card in the Wii (not mini or micro) - the "Wii compatible" ones are simply SD cards with a Wii logo on them. I bought a 1GB card for £8 in Woolworth's last year and it worked fine, a friend had his digital camera around and we popped his card in to look at the photos on the Wii and it too worked fine.

Komplett are selling 1Gb SD for a Tenner - and 2 giggers for €20. You can get more expensive ones for high data transfer but you only really need them for photography etc.

unfortunately not. as far as i know gamecube saves must be saved on a gamecube memory card when played on wii.

and sd cards dont have to be marked "wii compatible". any sd card will work in wii and you'll find that card NOT specifically marked "wii compatible" are better value for money, while still working in wii :)

    check these out: http://www.komplett.ie/k/search.aspx?q=sd+cards

i have used a regular sd card that i bought before the wii was even around!

Agree - it's cynical marketing. I could buy a wholesale load of 1GB SD cards for a fiver a pop - repackage them saying "Suitable for Wii and flog 'em for €15... no? damn you scruples!

is it possible to get a memory card which work in both (gamecube & wii)?

The Wii uses its internal memory for Wii saves so if you get a Gamecube memory card you're set to save any game. Although if you want to transfer Wii saves you'll need an SD card (not SDHC).

As far as I know the Wii won't save directly to the SD like a traditional memory card but I could be wrong.

not entirely sure about this. i think gamecube saves are all thats stored on a gamecube memory card, not wii saves. so i dont think theres any form of memory that you can save both wii and gamecube saves, if thats what you are asking spongebob. as red fox says, once you have a gc memory card, you can save any type of game! just not in the same place....

Slightly off topic I know but please have patience with the Wii newbie, what does it use the sd card for? I know it has internal memory for the Wii saves, is it just that this is limited and then saves to the sd card? I dont have an sd card in mine yet so why will I need it or why will it be better with it? Thanks.

yes the wii can save games on the sd card. also you can put photos on it for the photo channel, music for games that allow you to play your own mp3s in game, things like that.

the wii's internal memory is only 512mb so yeah the sd is an expansion of the memory. also you can take your saves to other wiis.

i think its nice that they havent made custom wii memory cards. sd cards are something most people will already have if they have a few gadgets, and if not theyre pretty cheap to pick one up!

It is good that Nintendo used an open standard - it is galling that Gamestop are selling 1GB "Wii" SD cards for €30 and 2GB for €60 - esentially taking advantage of people who are not familiar with the technology. I saw a 2GB SD card in aldi for €18 .

Personally I find it handy to have an SD card fro the Wii - i can transfer photos from my PC and view them on the Photo Chanel

That 4GB card will be SDHC (regular SD only goes to 2GB) and as such can't be read by the wii.
