Netopia firewall settings

I have the Netopia wireless router standard issue from Eircom (silver box).
I setup NAT port forwarding to allow me test servlets running on Tomcat
on the private wireless LAN. Initially I couldn't access the port on which
Tomcat was running until I relaxed the firewall setting in Basic settings mode
from Medium (recommended) to Low. According to the basic documention
the low setting isn't more liberal about letting inbound connections other
than the port which I performed nat port mapping/forwarding (the Tomcat
port). I understand it just means that the router IP address is no longer
    private.

Should I be cautious with relaxing the firewall from medium->low setting?
Are there other safer options (eg, setting up specific packet filtering
rules in advanced firewall settings on the netopia)?

    -ifc
