Thanks. I haven't actually seen the magazine yet and I'm sure I have to thank Brendan for some editing. Very happy that Luke liked it.

Lol - not exactly :) Normal service will resume from the next issue!

It was a great piece by Nicky (which needed minimal editing!).

It turned out more interesting than i could have hoped, mainly due to the colourful back story.

The issue gets uploaded to the web (cardplayereurope.com) on the first of each month for those that miss it in the clubs around the country.

You can also see Padraig and Mad Marty's monthly columns up there before they go to print under the 'Poker Blogs' section now and rag2gar has a very well researched piece on poker betting markets over the next month or two.

Thanks again Nicky - its pieces of work like that which make my job easy.

    Cheers.
    b.

Note (i have no connection to any casino)

I am what you would call a fish, I play maybe 12 tournaments per year ( on pay day!) in the Fitzwilliam card club I won one last year down to a lucky run of cards but im not the best by any means, I just enjoy the occasion! and a pay out finish is a bonus.....

While there's nothing majorly wrong with the Fitzwilliam, I researched a few other paces online and It brought me to cool hand lukes, , , last night.

I had read a few excellent reviews so I was expecting a decent casino.

From the moment I stepped into the place, It just didn't feel right.

When I walked in just after 8.30 there was a couple of lads outside smoking, , but no one on the actual door / or at the desk ! ! as It was my first time there I was expecting to set up a membership but no ! I went in .. no questions asked

So I walked In further and afer asking a couple of people for directions got upstairs... There was a real feeling of ''being in someons living room'' at first. The dealer on a cash game in the corner was wearing a Man United jersey!!! At first I though he was just a 'punter' in the dealers seat but later I saw him behind the counter, and shouting 'blinds up' etc.

I went up to register at the counter and 2 guys (neither dressed In shirt and tie As I remember) sorted me out with registration. (e100 fo) I was also given the 'option' to 'buy' a bonus for being on time ?? ? which I thought was a bit crazy ! ! ! and I assume went to the house and not to the pay out fund! I was thinking RYANAIR !

Then a more senior looking guy came along (maybe he's 'Luke'?), , things looked a little more professional from here on in. Except when he aggressively SHOUTED. . . ''shuffle up dealers'' as though the room was packed with 20 tables. The 2 dealers (easily within whispering earshot) began to deal promptly.

Overall as a ''fish'' I was quite disappointed, there was a real lack of atmosphere, , I could barely make out which chips where which (very strange & similar colours, but maybe i just needed to get used to them). The 3 dealers I had were occasionally pleasant. In the end I was delighted to be knocked out In time to join some pals for a few pints.

Maybe If I ever become a hardcore poker player some time in the future, this would be the place to go, but for now I'll be staying away.

I was going to give the ' Sporting Emporium ' Near Grafton St a go next month, I had read good thing about that too,,, but we'll see,, I might just stick to what i know!

After the last post felt I should put something up, as it was my first time in Lukes also last night ( had been when it was the Merrion). And its just amazing how people can get different impressions.

I went in early to play the 6pm Sat to the €100 game as I was at a loose end. Luke signed me up for membership and gave me a tour of the place and introduced to me to everyone. Very nice setup, basement online room and deli is a fine job.

The 2 lads taking the reg were Oscar and Mick (I think), Alright not shirt and tied, but very friendly and efficient.

The €100 game was a great structure, plenty of play, dealers were very good. One was very quiet, but done his job well. Plenty of refreshments, nice bit of grub at the break. (but I think your were gone then ttlting, if you are who I think).

The €5 for 1000 bonus chips is not something I had come accross before in Ireland, but is common practice for tournies in any poker room in vegas.

Nice bit of friendly banter at the tables, few loud characters, but thats part of poker, you need to enjoy it.

Luke even gave me a lift back to my hotel after the tournie, what more could you ask for.

That cash game you spoke about was a friendly €25 buyin game that was going since 6 (essentially a self deal) , the guy with manu jersey was playing but was just dealing for everyone as well. The shirt and tied dealers were dealing for the proper game later but I think you were gone at that stage ttilting .

I kind of understand what your are saying ttilting and perhaps a bit more of a professional appearance could be given, parts a bit rough round the edges, but I think the lads are still in startup mode.
Think I know who you were and you seemed very nervous, seemed like you couldn't give your chips away fast enough and get out. But you get what you give to a certain degree and dont think you gave the place a real chance.

25 and 500 chips are a bit of a problem alright, very similar, mentioned by a few people.

But overall a great club and a great game. Good luck with it Luke and Oscar.

As far as the bonus chips go all the money is put back in in promotions, win a ps3 during sunday freeroll, bubble tournament, gtd ticket satellites etc
Feedback taken on board. Especially with the chips, we actually got 3 different coloured 500 and 1000 chip in to use in different sized buyin tournaments, unfortunately each of them clashes with a lower denom chip, the choice was clash 25 and 500 or 100 and 1000, we will be replacing the 25chips asap.

It appears not which is annoying. Havent seen the mag in the jackpot in months. Perhaps Brendan or duke can confirm why this is?

    The Rock,

Some fair points made there, maybe I just entered at the wrong time. . . The overall point though is that I thought you guys wanted more '' casual '' (aka rubbish players) to ensure the payout are juicy , , , Lukes wouldn't attract that type of player in my opinion based on my experiance.

I'll give it a go in another 6 months I suppose... but won't reccomend it to any of my fish friends just yet !

I've deided to head to the SE next month, and probably back to the fitz the following month.

    Btw !
I did make the Break ! Surprisingly for me! I didn't feel nervous but maybe i gave off that impression???... I was knocked out when there were 2 tables left, I was short stacked & called all in pre flop with JJ and was beaten by KQs, 2Q6 K7 ( i think!) but thems are the breaks. I was happy with my performance !

Toally fair enough ! . . . . Im just giving a general view on my first visit to the club. I've seen Dealers at the fitz do similar things all the time.

Again,,, if you walk in, totally new to a club.. no one signs you up as a member ,,, and you have to find your own way around,,, you start to notice minor things like this.

I guess I just walked in to the club at the wrong time.
