Looks like PES 2008 will be incoming pretty soon. Seems from the above article that it might actually be a good game but I guess its hard to tell. Anyone played it on the PS ripoff or MicroScum 360? Any ides what the Wii port might be like. Probably not good...:(

The decoy run stuff and the offside-line control looks pretty snazzy. Starting to get excited by this one.

i actually think itll be great! real time plays, offside trap, proper full on tactics and set piece plays, its definatley the most interactive and realistic football game there is! id say itll take a while to get used to, with all the arrows and everything else but eventually itll be amazing imo!

How many wii ports from PS3 or XBOX 360 have been good?

Anyway they actually look like they have done a decent job here, the passing with wiimote could be epic the amount of frustrating passes you get on the PS2/PS3 was horrendous.

any idea of release date? ive heard so many dates now, anything definitive?

I have to say, even though I'm still a bit skeptical, I'm getting pretty excited about this. I'm just not sure how it'll work in 2 player offline mode with lines all over the place...It really could be great though, we'll find out soon enough!

IGN REVIEW is up. They have given it an editors choice award. Can't wait for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,762 ✭✭✭smokingman

I too can't wait for this - it looks like it'll blow away all conceptions of how to play a video game of soccer.....in a good way!

I love the idea of getting rid of the solo run all the way up the pitch as was the norm in every other version of the game ever made.

reviews are looking decent alright. I was actually really hoping that this would be good.

It may help sell the Wii to the legions of PES fans and capture more of the young adult male demographic that the "kiddy" image of the console may not have appealed to.

Also, since it's only the first iteration of a soccer game with motion sensitive controls, we can only hope they'll be further refined, and a positive reaction and strong sales would only spur the makers (and competitors) to work with the Wii and refine the control system to (hopefully) continually inprove it.

And hopefully makers of other sports games might learn something and make some fantastic sports games where the Wii control system isn't just tagged on, but a positive and integrated feature.

Gamestop are robbers. They were charging €64.99 for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games when it was released. They are consistently €5 dearer than GAME or HMV...

Unless they've changed their policy within the last 2 months, they do deliver to ROI. I got mario strikers with free delivery. Just over €40 for the game.

I might just buy this in Game if it's not too dear anyway, I want it the day it comes out!

I think it came out a day or two ago here (I've seen five different release dates, including Konami's official website claiming it was out on the 11th, which caused frustration :/ ) so I'm going to look for it on the way home today. I'll let yis know what I think.

Release date for PES 2008 in Ireland is the 28th March. It already been out in the US since 18th march and it has been given great reviews so far... IGN 8.6/10 and ONM 90/100. so it should be well worth the wait.

And Play.com has free delivery worldwide so actually quite good value (never let me down) but I will be buying this on release day!

Can't wait for online leagues too!:D

Fair enough. I bought the game January 16th, and they definitely delivered for free to Dublin. I'm pretty sure someone on these boards recommended ASDA as I doubt I went looking for a grocery store from the UK to buy cheap games.

Back on thread, can someone elaborate on the online leagues? Is this an official feature? Or something that is put together by the players?

I just checked online and as far as online games are concerned you can play ‘Free Matches’ against unknown opponents, or ‘Friend Matches’ against people on the Wii’s Friends list but you can also send Team data to friends via the console’s WiiConnect24 system.

Thats all I can find out. But hopefully if it's not already part of the game then there is always websites like www.pesfan.com to sort out leagues/tournaments between players. Just hope they include wii as they already have every other platform catered for!

Played the Japanese version a little bit. The control system is crazy, and will takes days and days of playing to get used to. At the moment, even the most simple things require extravagant mental olympics to pull off. It's absolutely unlike any other football game.

is all this a good thing iyo?

I got it yesterday.. it's only $40 here!

At first it felt like typical zany wii fun. The sort of lighthearted thing that all the family can enjoy... nice lofted pass to switch sides, a one two to slice defence open and poking the ball home. Fast, exciting stuff.

Then the frustration set in. Defending felt more like a spectator sport than before. Basically, the (fairly lightweight) introduction tutorials explained defending as: click on the ball carrier to send someone to get the ball off him. And you can even click on him twice to send two players to get it off him. woot :| And the opposing defenders never gave me time to orchestrate my intricate playmakings.

BUT! I stuck with it, I read the manual a bit to find the finer techniques, and I'm starting to get a pretty good feel for it. There's so much more to defending than I first thought. Basically, you want to think of this game as a RTSS.. A real-time soccer strategy :) If you've got madd stacraft skillz at manipulating all your units everywhere at the speed of light, and trauma centre-conquering precision with the pointer, I can see you putting up a near impenetrable defence.

At the same time, attacking became more intuitive. You learn to look up and, while still keeping an eye on how much space your ball carrier has, manipulate your runs and fake runs and runs which appear fake at first but are really a saucy way of playing a 1-2-3 with Lampard getting the ball to his feet just inside the box and... this game really is in its element in the final third.

You're constantly probing, and it's so simple to choose if you want to play the ball in to feet or send it over the top, or even to your target man for a knockdown... Diagnoal runs are deadly, and you can trigger them at the drop of a hat. When you score a good goal, chances are its because you picked the one spot to roll the ball into where only your forward was able to run onto it. But every goal's felt a bit a special so far, even the straightforward headed crosses.

I still have issues with it... when you lose possession because the defender anticipates your wicked through ball, it feels good, but sometimes you lose possession because you're trying to dribble into space and accidentally send someone else off on the run, leaving your ball-carrier stranded, and that sucks.
Also, even when you feel like you've got everyone man marked, and two solid rows of four defending your box, Berbatov still manages to crawl through your centreback and score, but I guess that happens in real life, too :)
When you gain possession in your own box under pressure, it's extremely difficult to pass or dribble out of it (there are so many bodies in such a tight space that you never who you're clicking on), so I usually end up doing a hoofed clearance.
Oh, and free kicks are completely worthless, though I think I've only had two so far, so maybe I just need more practice with them.

At least the good throw-ins are back! And when your keeper gets the ball, it zooms out and you can almost pass to anyone on the pitch.

At the end of the day, it's a great idea, but it won't replace the standard control-pad footie game, at least not without some serious refinement. Sometimes, when I'm playing a RTS, I just yearn to get down there and take better control of one person and play a FPS instead :)

Oh, I also played one online game, but it took a while to find an opponent, and the lag was pretty bad. Such are the realities, I'm sure, of being an early adopter of a soccer game in a non-soccer country. It was good, but all the arrows and circles and everything that my opponent was drawing appeared on the screen too! Why would they do that?

What is the shooting like, esp the long-range stuff - is there any degree of control over where to place a shot? What about chipping the keeper - is that do-able? Or an entirely automatic thing depending on the player you're in control of + the situation.

Presumably the corners aint up to much either?

All sounds good however! Looking forward to giving it a go.

free kicks aint up to much if you're shooting..but corners re brilliant, you can get all your players to make runs into the box and pick them out...great game...a few flaws but i guess its natural being the first try

The only control you have is whether you want a straight shot or a chipped shot... everything else is up to the AI.

And like zuchum says, corners (and indirect frees) are excellent.
