Heya folks can anyone tell me whats the deal with starvation mode?I was told that recently my body is in starvation mode because the past few years i've been living on about 500 cals a day at the most 1000 with a few occansional binges.I have a terrible history of eating disorders i've had everyone you can think off and im currently battling compulisive overeating which meant i go from peroids of starving to binging on junk to the point of sickness.

Anyhow i've been trying to give the whole eating like a normal person thing a go (not tooo much or too little) by eating around 1200 cals a day and have found im putting on loads of weight all of a sudden! To a person with as bad a history as mine this is not good news at all ,so could someone offer me any info about starvation mode ,is it sense or a lot of bull crap?

    Thanks :D

YOur body is fed little and learns to deal with it. Rather than die it becomes more efficient with the food you give it. So at the moment you are like a fuel efficient car, you get by on little fuel. If you put in too much you will get fat since you are taking in more calories than you need to survive. You have screwed up your own system into thinking you are in a famine state and it clings onto the fat.

Lifting weights will increase your muscle mass and increase the energy you need to take in.

    better read this first.

I am not going to give any advice as I think you might need professional help with it. If you were living like that for years and have only heard of starvation mode now then you need to do a lot of reading, the stickies are a good start.

Pretty sure recommended calorie intake for most women is around 2,000. Wouldn't like to give any other advise, you should probably talk to a nutritionist.

Starvation mode is very real Hairspray, as rubadub has outlined. It means you're going to need to treat your body to extra tlc as you bring it back to normal.

I wholeheartedly agree that you should speak to a qualified nutritionist about this, and possibly look into www.bodywhys.ie for supplementary support.

    Best of luck.
