Tagging Files and Catalogs?

When I tag photos, JPG and RAW, in Adobe is it a good idea or bad idea to save the tags into the files themselves or should I just keep the tag information in the catalog. When I tag photos, JPG and RAW, in Adobe is it a good idea or bad idea to save the tags into the files themselves or should I just keep the tag information in the catalog. Will writing tags into the files reduce the image quality of the jpgs by recompressing them?

I ask because I recently had my laptop stolen and while I had all my photos backed up my Elements 6 catalog was out of date by a several weeks. I've finally got my old and slow laptop running again but it has taken me a while to catch up on my tagging. I do have the catalog backed up now, including a copy in work but am wondering what everyone else does.
