Have the diamonds - need a ring

    Hi,
I am planning on proposing to my girlfriend next month. In December I was travelling and I bought loose diamonds - unfortunately by the time the shop I was dealing with sourced the three diamonds I was looking for they did not have time to make up a ring for them before I had to return to Ireland.
I am planning on getting them put on a ring by a jeweller in Dublin. I have heard, from some friends, that some jewellers can be a bit "rude" to you when you did not purchase the diamonds from them - on the other hand some jewellers do not mind that you bought the diamonds somewhere else and are extremely helpful.
If anyone has past experiences in Dublin with taking the diamonds to a jeweller and getting the ring can you please tell me. Any tips on good jewellers which might do this (and the ones to avoid) would also be appreciated.

(I don't want to ask my friends about which jewellers they had bad experiences with as I don't want anyone (that knows me) to know that I am planning on proposing)

    Thanks,

    FPAON

Maybe you can try Patrick Glynn on Middle Abbey Street, They are Jewellery Wholesalers and make their jewellery themselves. Give them a call and see if they will do something for you.

Are you planning on designing and having the ring made before you propose? I know a guy who proposed to his now wife with a ring box which simply had a loose diamond in it. They then designed the engagement and wedding rings together. Just an idea :)

That sounds nice, and at least there's less risk of the ring not being right for her.

Just be careful that you don't drop the diamonds...

    Hi,
It's good to hear a second nod for ESL - I will definitely check it out.

    Any other places people recommend?

I had thought about the diamond in a box idea but it'll be when we're on holidays and I worried enough about loosing the loose diamonds carrying them back on the flight after buying them - I would prefer to have them put on a ring - if she doesn't like the ring I can always change it?!?!?

    Thanks again.

    Hi,
Got engaged in December and my h2b got my ring in O connors in harolds cross and they have been excellent, he designed it and chose individual dimonds to go into it, unfortunatly it was a little big so we've been bac a few times to get it resized and th final outcome was for them to remake the ring in my size for it to be perfect....they have been fab the whole time and sure we'll deffo get th wedding rings off them too so they'll make their money that way if ur going to bring your own dimonds.

    hey,
I'm not sure what this place is like but you can check it out since you have the time. there is a place upstairs in Georges st. arcade. i know they design rings here so it may be helpful. if you have the diamonds you could maybe think of a design yourself and they might give you feedback on it. myself and my finance got my ring made up together last month which i really enjoyed being apart of. we were in Thailand at the time so i wont recommend her as you wont be traveling all that way.
    best of luck ring searching!

ESL is Emma Stewart Liberty and they are based in the Powerscourt Centre. If you come in from the Grafton St side, go up the stairs and to the left, they're just there at the corner of the building.

Thanks again for all the info - have my list made up now and planning on taking a trip to a couple of the places later this week.

Spotlight - good luck with the searching!

I couldn't recommend Celtic Jewellery too highly. They're in the IDA Enterprise Centre on Pearse Street. Ring 6705703 and ask for Tony. Quality workmanship, not too dear, sound bloke to deal with.

    Hey FPAON,
Any feedback on how you got on? I'm thinking of buying a diamond online (don't worry, it would be somewhere reputable like blue nile) and getting the ring made up in Ireland. Just a bit worried that I might hit problems from jewelers who would miss out on the massive markup on the diamond. Are any of the previous suggestions worth trying?

    Hi Quacky,
I went with ESL in the end - they were pretty expensive but my problem was that I was not 100% sure of the required ring size and they said that they would resize it if it was incorrect - some places said they would not be able resize platinum without leaving a slight mark. The people in ESL were extremely helpful - have been back in since to get the ring slightly adjusted - would definitely recommend them.

It might be worth checking out www.israel-diamonds.com - this is not where I got the diamonds, but I was speaking to Brad there (yes he's American) - they are based in the Maccabbi building in Tel Aviv.
