...to leave my job during the summer (I hate it)

I've currently got about 5k worth of debt left to pay off and I've budgeted until the end of May in order to have this paid off. I'm heading off in June for 3 weeks and when I come back I intend on handing in my notice and working til the end of July. At this stage I will be debt free so my last paycheck will keep me going for a month or two...

Where I'm working now is an IT dept of a large financial institution. I've been here for 2.5years and have recently been turned down for a promotion. I'm working as a developer in a dead language. I have a degree in computer science and feel my best skills are liasing with clients over projects and translating the requirements to the development team, although I dont get to do much of that in here :( . I also don't mind doing development work myself, I find it can be very rewarding.

    The thing is though...
I'm not sure if I should have a word with a recruitment consultant before I head off on my holliers or wait til after. I don't mind having to wait a month before going into a new job after I come back.... 2 months at the most.

However, I'm not sure if I want to stay within the current stream i'm working (i.e; financial institutes). I'd like to bring my IT skills into a new area with more customer interaction as I'm an outgoing person with good communication skills.

Anyone got any comments on the plan? Any suggestions on career move?

    Thanks in advance.

I'm never really sure what people expect when they start a thread like this

You want people who know very little about you to advise what path you should take in your career it's bizzarre.

What would you like to do?

what other information would you need to know in order to offer advice on quitting without having a new job lined up, talking to a recruitment consultant, heading off for a while etc..?

Work for an IT Consultancy, Technical sales, Business Analyst or Project manager

Talk to the recruitment agency closer to the time you are going to resign (2 or 3 months). Talk to someone in your current company about an internal move.

I wouldn't bother with the recruitment consultant - they'll just push you into whatever position they're trying to fill. Your interests are not in line with their interests...

I guess my advice would be don't let yourself get back into debt. So if that means taking some imperfect dev job when you get back from your holidays, so be it...

Do you mind me asking what dead language you use?
