Looking for a HDD DVD Recorder - Recommendations?

    Hi All,

My video recorder officially packed in last night, and I've decided to join the 21st Century and pick up a DVD Recorder as a replacement.

I was just wondering if there were any recommendations out there for one that roughly does the following.

    - Timeslip (where you can pause live TV).
    - Playback while recording (so you can start watching a program while you're still recording the end of it).
    - Good recording quality from SD Source (only have Analogue Aerial).

    Optional extra features:
    - Editing (to be able to cut out ad breaks, etc.)
    - If it had a Digital Tuner as well as Analogue that would be a nice bonus, but Analogue will do for now)

I was looking to spend about €300-ish.
    - Is it worth spending extra to get a name brand?
    - Are there any other features that might help 'future proof' the DVD recorder?

If there are any brick & mortar shops in the north dublin area where you know of deals, that'd be great too.

Any / All advice greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

Thanks for that - Looks like it has everything going for it. I'll see if I can pick one up :-)

trabpc, how quick is it to play a normal DVD.
I am looking for one that's as fast as possible!

I'd agree with that reccomendation, the Sony and the Panasonic DMR-EX77 are the best regarded of the current models. The Panasonic generally seems to be the favourite but I have both and would say the Sony is the better one.

If you mean how long it takes to load a disc, about 10 seconds for a pressed disc.

Just out of curiosity, why would quick loading be an important feature?

I moved from a DVD player to a DVD recorder but primarily use it for playing dvd's. The start up speed frustrates me and I understand DVD recorders are slower that DVD players to play in general. I just want a quick one for playing normal or pressed DVDs!

In the end I went for the Sony - RDR HXD870 (Currys had them in Blanch) for 399, but I got €20 off the price for asking nicely.

The only difference I can see is that it has a DTT tuner, and it appears to be a little better for storing on the Hard Disk (according to manufacturers specs).

The DTT Tuner is good for the FTA Channels in the Current Dublin Trial - clear picture, easily recognised the channels and the EPG. But that's only useful until about August '08, or so.

First impressions, it's quiet and relatively quick to load a DVD; picture quality is superb; It'll also upscale DVDs over the HDMI connection, too...
Now, to get a bigger TV :)
