Hi, hope this is the right forum to ask this question.

I have an Acer laptop only 3 months old. I've had 3 mobile broadband for around the same time & have no problems up to last Friday (11th Jan). Since then every time I try to log in I get the message 'connection failure'. However I have tried the modem on a couple of PCs and it worked fine - so obviously my laptop is the problem. I have been in contact with 3 support but despite trying a number of things (uninstalling possible incompatible programs - connecting manually etc) nothing seems to work - in fairness as the modem is working I'm not sure what they can do for me. I haven't installed anything new recently so I'm not sure what could have happened before last Friday that would cause this. Any ideas?

Two things you could do. First would be a system restore. You can find this from your start menu>programs>system tools>system restore.

Choose the option to restore your computer to an earlier time, and select a date before from from any ones listed in bold.

Unplug the modem if attached and follow the onscreen instructions. Can take 5-10 minutes to do it. You won't loose data, only settings changed/ programs installed over the last few days.

Once completed attach the modem and wait. I've noticed on vista sometimes an installation can take several minutes for it to look like anything is happening. That and it seems to need to install several drivers to get it working. Basically let it run by itself for maybe 5-10 minutes and then see does the installer load. If not (and it's not listed as a removeable drive in my computer) try msconfig.

I found on a dell before that there was some crappy dell service stopping the application from loading. Disable all non-microsoft services for the time being. You may also want to look at the applications you have in your startup as well to see if you need them all. Apply close and restart. Try modem again.

Cheers MarkR. I restored to the last time before this problem happened & it worked first time. Pity you don't work for 3 support.;)

    Thanks again

My brother cannot connect to the internet at the moment - he is using a desktop and a dial up connection.

I have restored settings and checking the line.

He keeps getting unable to connect to outside line.

Could this be modem trouble or a virus?

    Hard to tell

    Do this

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
    • Close all other windows before proceeding.
    • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
    • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
    • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
