DVD Box design

There's been some crazy dvd boxes come out over the years so couple of questions for you folks:

    What is you favorite?

what do people think was the most inventive/creative one?

And what one was just way to impractical?

And what were the just plain crazy ones?

My fav was the old buffy boxes - the ones that had a hard clip case cover and when you took it out it was like a book. The redesign ones are cheaper to make but they don't look nearly as pretty.

I really liked the design for Northern Exposure - i'm not sure if it came out in region 2 the same but the region 1 boxes had little zip up jackets on them to keep warm and the compelete series comes in this really niffty bag

Bad design wise I found the Star Enterprise box sets really annoying - they looked really cool but were hard to open and didn't fit on any shelf. Most of the star trek boxsets where like that when they first came out, all made from really hard plastic and you had to crack them open like easter eggs to get at the dvds. They've slowly been replacing the hard plastic ones with more standard, and rather boring, boxes.

The Phantasm collectors box set was really cool looking but drove me up the wall as its really hard to take the dvds out without scratching them.

The Alien/Predator/I Robot heads are amazing - my brother has all 3.

I have the Alien Quadrilogy boxset (9 DVD) but there was a limited edition head that looks cool but a bit awkward. :)

My brother collects a hell of a lot of limited edition / rare DVDs - those 3 are the most impressive IMO. But he also has the 300 Spartan Helmet edition, the Saw blood cover, the Saving Private Ryan soldier sack.... too many to mention.

I rarely buy DVDs - only have about 9 - 10 - I really only buy ones I would watch repeatedly that my brother doesnt have, but one I had to buy (because I got it for so cheap) was the Deluxe Scarface Box set....

Its simple, they just slide out of the small bit of torso thats at the bottom, not the head itself.

Forgot to mention he also has the Transformers cartoon collection ina Transformable box!

My favourite design of a dvd box that I have would probably be the complete box set for Invader Zim, which is shaped like his house! Ok, so it doesnt fit comfortably on a shelf, but its SO freakin sweet looking :D

The dvds themselves would slot into the front and then the roof part opens to contain a lil minuture G.I.R toy. Yes, I'm a sad, sad man

The one design I thought was a bit pointless (but couldnt find a photo of) was that of the special edition directors cut of Stargate, which when you folded the box out (and worked a bit of pop-up magic on it) would turn into a pyramid. But when you have it in this lovely pyramid shape, the dvd would be trapped on the inside, so you'd have to take it apart to get at the movie again! Seriously not worth the bother :p

Oh and YAY the picture link actually worked!!

My favourite is the special edition of Event Horizon:

    Also the Evil Dead trilogy:

And the award for down-right tacky goes to:

Always been a fan of the Evil Dead one myself.
But I dont think Id ever spend the money just to get some cool packaging. Some of the ones Ive seen have been ridiculously expensive, and there are very few of my favourite films that would or could get the uber-cool SE treatment. I'd rather a nice, fully rounded disc (e.g. the Criterion collection DVDs, criminally unavailable here) than a purely gimmicky helmet.
