    Hi,

Theres a program on the machines in the gym called Speed Interval which consists of short periods of high intensity and longer periods of low intensity
    like so :

    I I I I I
    I I I I I
    I I I I I
    I I I I I I
    IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

I think its about 18s at the high intensity and 36s (or longer at the low intensity)

Just wondering if I crank the level up to 20 ( the maximum ) and do this for between 12 to 20 mins, is it a HIIT workout ?

    Thanks

    Hi Tommy,

My understanding of HIIT is that when you are at your high interval that you are pretty much giving it everything you have for a short period (normally 30 - 60 sec depending on your current level of fitness) and that the 'rest period' would be 2-3mins (again depends on your current fitness levels) whereby your heart rate drops considerably from what it was at during the high interval. Also speaking of heart rate, I find using a heart rate monitor is good for HIIT as you get a good statistical indicator of how you fitness/heart condition is improving over a number of months.

The main point I would stress though (for anyone reading this) is that HIIT is not something anyone should just start out doing, you need to have 'some' level of fitness and take it slowly... i.e during a 25 min cardio workout start off with maybe 2/3 'bursts' then gradually over a number of weeks you could up the frequency of them.

Well that's from my experience and reading many posts in here on this topic.

    Hope that helps.
