AVRT.dll error

When i boot the pc (windows vista home premium) i get a message similar to this before the user accounts screen. (This is the message i get if i try to open WMP)
    wmplayer.exe - Bad Image

C:\Windows\system32\AVRT.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

Once the computer has booted fully i get a message telling me that windows media player has stopped working. My audio is not working either. I've tried system restore and system file check with no change. It asks me to reinstall WMP in the window after the one shown above.

    Thanks for your help.

Reinstalling windows media player isn't really a huge job, should take 10 mins tops

I can't seem to find a vista version for WMP 11, the one i found was for XP and it told me i couldn't install or repair because it was older than the version i had.

Did no instal/recovery discs come with your PC ? If not , is there a recovery partition on your hd ? A longer shot would be Windows Update . Do you know anyone else with Vista Home Premium . Maybe you could copy avrt.dll from their machine and overwite the damaged copy on your PC .

Apologies if none of the above is applicable - I've very little experience of Vista (just enough to keep it off my machine lol) .

Just to further nessyguin's suggestion. Possibly uninstall Windows Media Player completely and then run Windows Update. After one or two updates it should suggest Windows Media Player as an update.
