Is there much work out there in the health and safety area and does it pay well?

What sort of qualifications are required?

Thinking a change of career may be in line. Any advice?

    Hi Just The One,

there is available work in h&s, especially in construction although that may dry up soon enough. Pay is usually 30-40k for an experienced person though it varies. You wont get rich in safety.

It can be a difficult field to get into, you need qualifications and some practical experience in the field in which you want to work-construction, manufaturing, pharama, etc. You will need a formal qualification in safety, probably a diploma which can take two years part time. It will be difficult unless you can get someone to take you on while you are training. Some of the consultancies take on 'trainees' and pay them less whilst they are getting their qualifications and expewrience.

    Good luck.

Ye there is work out there, but its a crap job.

I worked at it for 2 years in 2 different companies and hated it. Your a burden on everyone, wont always get support from the powers that be and staff dislike most things you make them do.

Plus its so OTT for the most part, I found myslef telling people to do things that I knew were overkill but had to be done. Plus all the pointless paperwork.

Lets just say i hated it.

Check out the IOSH forum and go to the careers section (also note the amount of people disillusioned with the profession). Also read through the general forum to see what tedious stuff you'll have to deal with all the time - will give a good overview of the work involved
