Condensor Mic / Recording Problem

    Hey,
Hope someone can help me with some advice.

I'm recently bought a Studio Projects B1 Condensor mic and VTB1 Pre Amp. The problem i'm having is that in order for me to hear anything from the mic i have to turn the input gain and output levels to pretty much maximum. Otherwise nothing comes through. However when i do this i get massive amounts of feedback / overdrive.

I know the problem lies with the mic - as i've run an ordinary Sennheiser Mic through the pre amp and its fine - no feedback or overdrive as i can keep the Input Gain and Output levels at a normal level.

Any help on this would be great - i'm sure i'm missing something obvious!

have you switched on the phantom?

The output of your B1 should be around the same as a Senn so, as you say, that implies the mic.

If phantom wasn't on there wouldn't be a peep out of it so that's probably ok too.

The fault would seem to be the mic though try again with a different XLR cable to remove that from the list of probs (though very unlikely a dynamic might work if only one pin was down on an xlr).

Your only option is to bring it back to your dealer. Where did you get it?

thanks a mill for that lads,

yeah phantom is on alright - and line in is off.

Not sure what you mean by the pads on the mic and pre amp though. Again the sennheiser sounds fine through the pre amp so it must be the mic.

I bought it in waltons so i'll get on to them about it.

    Thanks Again!

Doesn't the B1 have a pad switch on the body of the mic? It attenuates the signal coming in by 10/20 dB. If that's on you're decreasing the signal to the preamp, although reading again the "symptoms" of the problem it's probably not what's wrong.

It does now but the older models didnt.

I'd recommend you bring it back to waltons and get them to A-B test it with another B1. Bring everything, your preamp, leads, sennheiser mic so you can get to bottom of it in one go.
