Dell are telling me that it isn't, and i can't get the wireless to work - my laptop only occasionally sees the signal, but it can never connect, even when i turn off the security. The ethernet works fine.

    Dear Mr. Smith,

    Thank you for your reply.

I have searched for the model number you have provided and see that it is a Motorola made router. I also wish to suggest that Netopia 2247-02 Router is not listed under 2200 series on the Motorola support site. I request you to kindly confirm the router's compatibility with Windows vista as some of the hardware including routers are not compatible with Windows Vista.

If the router is Windows Vista compatible, kindly get the router configured with your system. For this, kindly contact the router manufacturer or yot Internet Service Provider.

I am sure the issue is only with the router configuration. Please reply me incase of any unresolved issues and I will be happy to assist you.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to assist you. Your case number for this interaction is 523650952.

Thank you again for contacting Dell Hardware E-Support.

    Respectfully,

That's odd, because I have one or two Vista clients connected to a Netopia 2247-02 router. In fact, I'm on one of them now.

Do other wireless clients see the router & connect OK?
Does your laptop see&connect to other computers or routers OK?
What software is your laptop using - Dell usually ship them with the Intel PROSet, or their own or simply leave it to WLANConfig. Which method was tech. support using? What wireless card is installed (Start->run->devmgmt.msc-> expand network adaptors)?

They're full of crap, TBH. There are one or two issues with the router but I don't buy that as the reason/problem here.

I'm outta here for a while, so the usual:
Download and run something like NetStumbler - see if the wireless router is broadcasting a strong signal. Also, check for other wireless networks - and whether they're using the same channel or +/- 2 channels. If there's any networks close using the same+/-2 channels - change the channel on your router to something unique and at least 2 channels away from the others. Then, try connecting again via wifi.

some good tips there - i will look at them this evening when i have access to my laptop. I will bring the laptop into work tomorrow to see if it is seeing the local wifi signal. The internal laptop wireless adapter is the Intel 3945ABG. I also explained to Dell that i have failed to get the wireless to work using linux as well.

    thanks for your time

all right, i brought my work laptop home, it runs XP - and it is connected all day at work to the wifi signal. The laptop with XP sometimes sees the SSID from the router and sometimes it loses it and i have to reboot to see it again. It will not connect - this is strange because i have connected this computer to the router before, but not for a month or so. Any ideas what i can look for now?

I now believe the problem is with the router. I have my laptop at work connected to the wirelss LAN here with no problems. Seeing as i have 2 laptops that cannot connect to the wireless signal at home it must be the router. The reception of the signal at home is intermittent, sometimes it is lost and i have to reboot, and usually it comes back, sometimes a reboot of the router is required. Though a web-based restart never helps. Both computers can at times however see the wireless signal, but neither can connect, even with no security enabled.

    help please!!

Those eircom modems aren't the best by a long shot. If two notebooks are setup correctly and only intermittently connect i'd replace the modem. Call eircom and let their tech guys go through their checklist to make sure there is a fault and request a replacement. If it's out of warranty or something pick up a new one in pc world or second hand.

spoke to Eircom last night and went through all their checks - nothing that i hadn't tried a hundred times my self. I finally convinced them it was the router. It's only a few months old so they are sending me a new one.

Thanks all - surely the new one will work...

    Hi All,
So, my laptop will not connect to the Eircom-supplied Netopia 2247. Sometimes is 'see's' the signal from the router and sometimes when i do a refresh it loses it. I bring a second laptop home, that uses the same network adapter, the Intel ipw3945 gizmo, it even uses a different OS - XP instead of Vista on my own laptop. The second laptop cannot connect. It must be my netork adapter - surely. I take my laptop into work where there is a wireless network and it connects first time, no hassle.
Definitely the router at home then. After about an hour on the phone to Eircom and running a battery of tests i convince them to send me a new one. It arrived today...
Exactly the same problem - dodgy reception of wireless signal, when it does see the signal, the signal strength is reported as 'excellent'. I have unplugged my home wireless phone, and took the battery out of my wireless mouse, and changed the default channel on the router. I have turned security off and on. No joy. I can't go to Eircom, they have done there bit i think - Dell will laugh at me if i tell them it connects fine at work!
I am at a loss as to where to go - i supposed i could buy a usb network adapter and try it - but my own one works fine at work - any ideas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 190 ✭✭limerick_woody

ok, it's up and running - do you need to connect to me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 794 ✭✭✭formatman

pm login details then and I'll take a look

you should have a email you choose , pass word and code

you also need to have a username and password setup on the laptop

setup a new account ( control panel , users) username test and say password test and leave it as an admin account

    Hi All,
Just for the record, in case anyone else gets a similar issue - i found the problem!

It turns out that my digisender (for transmitting the sky signal) totally blocks the signal - it is situated close to the router and i forgot it was there - i only use it when i am in my workshop. I had previously switched off the wireless phone, and even my wireless mouse, thinking the problem could be interference. It's odd that even switching through all available channels on the router didn't resolve this.

Thanks everyone, especially formatman for his time.
