    Hello

I am moving from o/s and was wondering how hard/easy it is to get casual work in the theatres in Galway.

Have film and tv background but also a few years of theatre lighting and back stage.

Is it possible to get casual work or do I need some sort of working permit? I have young children and was going to mostly be looking after them but as 2 of them will be at school and my 2 yr old might get some day care I was thinking of starting some casual work again.

    Caz

Sorry to ask the obvious but what/where is 'O/S'?

There are a few theatre companies in Galway. From May to September would be the busy season with street and theatre productions aplenty so I'd imagine they would be looking for any help they can get around that time, although there are stage productions throughout the year.

Not 100% sure but as far as I know If you're coming from within the European Union you won't need a work permit, however you will probably need one if you're coming from outside the EU

    O/S means Overseas.

    OP is from Oz

Macnas are always on the lookout. Might not pay much/anything at all.

I think even people from the EU have to get Garda Immigration to stamp the right papers ... but they are entitled to have this done.

People from outside the EU (except for lucky ones who hold dual citizenship!*) need work permits. These are not necessarily easily obtained, especially for jobs that Irish people would like to be doing.

But volunteers aren't "working" so no permit is necessary.

    * re this: if you have an Irish parent, you're entitled to a passport and citizenship automatically ... just need to get birth and marriage certificates, fill in the form and pay the fee. If you have an Irish grandparent, you need to ask for citizenship, but are still entitled to it once you do. (All based on what I know ... do check official sites for info .. but it's worked very nicely for me.)

As far as I know most backstage work in galway is on a volunteer basis. That said with your background it might be worth checking out The galway film centre and perhaps the arts centre also, they might have something for you. I doubt the money is particularly good with any of them though.
