I've had my Jackson King Flying V for over 2.5 years. It cost me approx £1500. I love the guitar, but it is one pain in the arse to play sitting down, or in tight spaces.

Since I spend 99% of my time fiddling around with it at home, I want to get rid of it and get a guitar that I don't have to stand in front of the tv playing, sitting at an akward angle, or watching out that I don't hop the corners or headstock off a wall and bust it up.

I also find the Flyod Rose floating bridge a bit of a pain in the ar$e tbh. I could probably survive without a tremolo bar.

So, before I go travelling the net in search of the ultimate guitar, what can you kind folk suggest I take a look at based upon my critera above? Pretty vague description I guess, any suggestions welcome.

Aye, like you say, pretty vague description, there's no end of guitars that guys could recommend.

I like the ol Ibanez RGA series myself. Nice fixed bridge there if you want a change from floyds.

What sort of sound are you aiming for? You still want a dual humbucker guitar? Do you like skinny or fat necks? A stratty shape or something Les Paul-ish?

TBH, your best bet is to do a tour of the shops and just play as many guitars as you can, get a feel for something and then explore the options in that direction. Tell them you're going to be here for a while and they better get you a comfy stool. It'll be fun, too ;)

Everybody here has their favourite brands but the only person who knows what'll work for you is you, and you probably won't know until you're holding it. There are countless options of brands and models and, tbh, once you're spending a decent amount you're pretty much guaranteed something decent so get out there, play everything and come back with your findings, then folks here'll sort you out with a good place to buy it from :D

    I feel your pain.

    How about this yoke:-

You definitely wont be whacking the headstock off of doorjambs with that one.

    Good one Johnny ;)

What do you guys think of a Paul Gilbert Ibanez? It felt the best of 4 guitars I messed around on yesterday. The others were a random Ibanez, a PRS (heavy arse on it which slid off my leg like a flying V, plus a classic Les Paul).

Is there an advantage to those head less guitars or do they just do it cause they can?

Excellent guitar. If you're after a fixed bridge strat style guitar, it's truly exceptional, really sounds good, and plays fantastically. Nearly bought a second hand one myself a couple of years ago. Really looks the business, doesn't it?

Yeah, the PGM guitars are great, no problems there. They're a fairly simple guitar, but you're getting the usual prestige fretwork and build quality. Excellent pickups and a great neck too.

A friend of mine has an Epiphone V bass, I thought it felt great to play sitting down, which I'm usually sh!te at and hate doing. Does your's not have the rubber grip on the under side of it no?

    Any other questions? ;)

Steinbergers are usually (at least partially) made from graphite or similar materials so they are small and have uniquely stable tuning. They use special strings with ball-ends at both ends. The reason it has no headstock is to keep the weight at the heel end of the guitar.

    Ok makes sense. Thanks

Your link doesn't seem to work though

Just to update this thread --> I got rid of the V on Saturday. Now I have an Ibanez Paul Gilbert. So far so good.

Man, it feels great to have a normal shaped guitar once more. I would equate playing the Jackson at home to driving a Ferarri around the back roads of Ireland. That was a great guitar, just not too practical at times.

Oh come on, Feyla. You could have at least went the extra mile and tried something like "Thank you for logging in BossArky with your new axe, BossArky" ;)

    Hush up, Feyla.

Tis a shame, I was kinda hoping to see that V show in on adverts :(;)

Therefore I, at least, am glad I got closure :D

Aye, like you say, pretty vague description, there's no end of guitars that guys could recommend.

I like the ol Ibanez RGA series myself. Nice fixed bridge there if you want a change from floyds.

Bought one of these myself (RGA321 FSPB) RGA321FSPB for pretty much all of the reason the original poster outlined, had an absolute dog of an Epiphone Explorer with a floyd rose bridge and locking nut which

    a) Refused to stay in tune, and
    b) Couldn't really be played sitting down either!

Absolutely delighted with what I got, hard tail all the way! And my God she's pretty....

Now I reckon the amp (100W Fender Deluxe) is holding it back so am looking to upgrade, Marshall JVM210C seems like what I'm looking for, anyone any experience with these?

Looking for an AC/DC GNR type sound, without much complication switching channels etc, Yay or Nay?! Needs to be gig-able and sound decent in the bedroom also, I've heard alot of all-valves need to really be cranked to get the most out of them so am a bit cagey...

Nice choice on the PGM. The neck is beautiful, really smooth feeling raw finish. Not a fan of the f holes but the neck makes up for it.

    Epic bump.

Just think. When this thread was started; no-one used the term "recessionary times", bertie ahern was still wielding the political ban-stick, sarah palin was 1 hockey-mom-joke away from being leader of the free world, and you could buy a litre of petrol for less than 73$ and your soul.

    Epic,epic bump.
