I'm looking forward to our work experience.....I'm nearly sure we have to do work experience lol

No work experience in CS! 100% sure.

I'm hoping to do the MA in Journalism as well!

Drat! I was nearly sure there was some in Yr 3! I had some sorted out and all! Raging!

Ah well. A few mates have done the MA in Journalism and really enjoyed it. But I am also considering the MA in Political Communications

I have my housemates heads wrecked talking about the course. Us mature students get to do a few days early though - we get two days of orientation.

    I'm counting down the days!!

Everyone has Orientation week! Well just in first year, obviously. It's where you get the introduction to the college, timetables, and meet your course tutors etc. Orientation week starts the 22nd this year.

Fresher's week is the first week of lectures, it's the first official week of college (known as Week 1, Orientation week is Week Zero), and it's when the college all come together cos all the other years are back to lectures as well. That starts Sept 29th.

So what you all looking to get out of the Degree?

What career path are you interested in or have you know idea yet?

I wanna be the next Hector.
Going on mad holidays all over the world for a living?

    Yes please.

And I was talking to some chap (Head of Journalism I think I remember him saying), on the open day, and he said that there was a possibility that Work Experience could be introduced by the time we're in third year.
He might just have been trying to reel me in though:rolleyes: (it worked)

    Fingers crossed anyway.

BTW this is now the longest DCU thread on boards.ie Go CS Fresher's 2008!

Ah, Martin Molony, he's a good lecturer. You'll have him for Media Technology in the first semester.

I met Dr. Debbie Ging when I did my interview and Prof Eithne Guilfoyle (I think) they were very very nice.

I've read some of Dr. Gings research. Very interesting

Debbie Ging was my favourite lecturer this year. She teaches Perspectives on Culture, a second semester module. I was dreading it a bit, cos I didn't like the study we did on culture theory in the first semester, but that Ging's module is great, it's a much more modern apporach, looking at culture from a media perspective rather than the theory of cultutre. There's really interesting stuff about feminism and subcultures, it was great, and Ging isn't out of touch with the students like some other lecturers are.

I haven't had (or even seen) Eithne Guilfoyle yet, so you won't be having much to do with her for a while!

Dr. Ging and I had a few interesting discussions alright on those areas and on political communication and utilization of media for political means. She definitely seemed to me as a Lecturer people would enjoy alright

Howdy all. Im heading into CA1 this year, at the lovely ripe age of 22, just wondering, I love my photography but whats the photo course like in year 2? Is it in depth enough to be a great help in the long run?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 227 ✭✭giveliberty

Oh and btw.....for all the budding journalists out there I took the liberty of speaking to the NUJ about getting members of the class registered as student members, which will of course be incredibly handy, and you will get a press card. So if interested PM me.

giveliberty, you mentioned you're going in as a mature student? I remember one or two of the mature students told me they were really nervous about going into a course with a load of LC grad students. Just to let you know, I think there were 6 or 7 mature students in my class this year so you probably won't be alone by any means! They also integrated well with the younger students, there were three or so of them who chose to keep to themselves, but other than that being a mature student isn't really an issue in CS.

That's cool! Well I'm not quite shuffling off this mortal coil yet I am only 26.....27 in September, so I would hope I can be integrated, or all hope is lost for me :)

That's the age of most mature students, or in and around. In my class I think the mature students age range from 24-30, although I'm pretty sure there's a 55 year old in Multimedia...

    :D

Back in my first stint in college (through the mists of time to 2000) our mature students were 40+ and they were very cool (bar one, there is always one).

I suppose there would be a lot of second chance students.

Going into third year now (all you newbies making me feel old :pac:) and chose video but everyone whos doing photography has a lot of good things to say about it. You usually have about three or four hours a week photography lectures, plus you'll like have a good bit of stuff to do outside of it. In first year it really is only a brief couple of week taster of the stuff you'll be doing (for example, in semester one you'll have two or three weeks taking photos, and in semester two two or three weeks in photoshop... and so on.)

Any other questions from any of you new CS1ers, ask away. I will do my darndest to answer them.

(Oh, and on the subject of work experience, yes there are rumors in may be introduced sometime soonish. It'll be after the three years though, either as a summer / kind of extra semester kind of thingie if I understand it. Optional too, with limited places.)

You may not know the answer to this one right away, but how free are we to decide our Thesis topics?

Video is good if you're interested. I really am all for video so I may be more enthusiastic than others though. We made a live TV programme last semester, which was one of the most fun but tricky learning experiences I've ever had (note: teamwork doesn't always go as swimmingly as you'd expect).
    Thanks Johnny!

Pretty much entirely free as far as I am aware, but probably won't find out the full details til we're back. Really should start thinking about that come to think of it...

I havent decided what stream I want to take. Is it just video, radio and photography?

Yeah they are the core choices, but theres other module options too. For example, I did Irish Cinema and European politics last semester, while others did 'cross cultural communications' and art and architecture. So there are other options within the course to suit your own interests.

For the production modules, yes. A lot of people in my class went in with the idea that they wanted to do video, but then have gone on to love audio or photography in first year. Usually video is most popular and competitive for places, but in my class, seemingly for the first time ever, photography seems to be more popular than video.

Oh yeah, what modules do you recommend other than the production ones? I'm kind of looking for an easy ride!
