Workflow - Deleting Files

I'm trying at last to organise myself and achieve some kind of system that can find files easily on my PC.

So first problem is deleting the stuff I don't want.

Obvious stuff I'll delete in camera, no problem.

For other stuff, I want to delete pre-processing, ideally before transfer to the PC. Is there a way to this, without doing it file by file?. What I'd like to do is highlight/tag say 30 random files out of 100 and say batch delete, one confirm and they are gone?.

Is there a way to do this easily either from the card or after importing to the PC.

BTW I use Capture 1 for RAW processing and CS2. I also have Adobe Bridge( which I don't use) and Picassa.

    Thanks

    T.

As I shoot, I tend to delete the images that are totally blurred. If I don't have time during the shoot (eg a sports event), then I just download everything to the PC.

I use Adobe Bridge (and/or Lightroom) to review my images. I tend to flag any I really like. The rest are left. The ones I like, get processed.

My problem - I hoard. This is not just photography (as my girlfriend will confirm). I tend to throw everything out on to external disks for storage.

I probably should go in, from time to time, and delete hundreds of images that really will never be touched or seen.

Maybe this thread will inspire me to clean out my images??

I often mass delete files while on the card but open through the PC, then transfer to the PC, just to reduce transfer, eaiser to sort out in one go then.

Bridge would be best for this, use it to import your pictures and just select the ones you like and bin the rest. Pretty handy to add keywords to them too in bridge

That would be the ideal solution, but how?

Looks like Bridge is the solution otherwise, so I'll have to learn it I suppose. Thanks all.

I use lightroom, flag all the ones as unpicked when viewing and then there is an option to delete all unpicked...viola..

Sorry for being a bit pedantic, but what program do you use to open and batch delete from the card. I don't have Lightroom btw.

    Thanks Keith

Bridge is easy for the basic dowloading/sorting stuff. You should get an autoplay option to use bridge when you plug in a card reader and that's all self explanatory but when you have the stuff in the folder you want, you can select multiple shots by holding down shift or ctrl just like in explorer, and delete them from there. Or, my process is: I highlight the first image in the folder, hit ctrl+L and it brings up a slideshow. I skip through using the arrow keys, and use the number keys 1-5 to rate each shot. Leave the ones you want to delete at 0 and the keepers at 1, the ones you want to process at 2 and your favourites at 3 - or develop your own key - then you can use the filters to show only the ones with a particular rating, which you can then do ctrl+A to select all and delete.

Bridge is a lot faster in CS3 than CS2 though, if you've got a slow machine you may struggle with it. Not like LR is any faster mind you...

And when you generate a JPEG it should add those keywords to the JPEG, so when you upload to somewhere like flickr they get added automatically :)

My workflow in lightroom is as follows, import from card, select library module, press caps lock, press l twice, then use the p(ick), u(ndecided) or x(clude) buttons to grade the shots. X's go to the bin straight away.

Caps lock tells lightroom to move to the next image automaticaly after you grade the current, and pressing l twice gives a black background for viewing.

This will be well tested when I get home from Oz, I've been shooting RAW + smalll jpeg and posting the jpegs on flickr. I arrived back to Perth yesterday from down south with 13GB.............
