Does anyone know if all versions of the PS3 bought in Europe are backward compatible for PS2 games?

    Only the 60gb version.

Thanks. Is this the model that has been discontinued?

Yes, the new 80gb should also have it when it comes out.

Is this the one that nobody seems to know about, apart from a few posts on here, which apparently came from an employee of Smyths or Gamestop?

Thats the one, although its out in the us, so there are specs. I can not see them removing the software emulation for ps2 for europe though.

mate got the 80 gb from us as present, still only rumours bout it being released in europe. I reckon sont have a quota of 40 gb they want sold before they even think of releasing 80gb

    OK here is my theory:
BC is gone for good in hardware of PS3. Its being phased out in Japan now and will be in US soon I bet.
Now what I expect to happen this year, is that specific BC will appear on PS2 titles that Sony will sell through PSN. This setup will be very similar to MS and their XBOX Originals.

sony removed it to keep shifting ps2's imo since i remember a while back they said they would announce 100 new ps2 titles by march and announced a new ps2 model which was the same slim only with the power brick internal.

this way also foirces ps3 owners that want some of these games to buy a ps2

I get what you're saying but in MS's defense the Originals can all be played on the 360 on disc as well

Sony removed backwards compatability because when people bought a PS3, they would simply play PS2 games on it as the PS3 games were too expensive. As Sony were making huge losses on PS3 production, they decided to remove BC as it would 1) lower costs and 2) force people to buy PS3 games, alleviating their losses.

BC may come back, but only once PS3 games are selling well.
