New camera behaving oddly

Hi folks, I bought a new Canon Powershot A570 IS from ebay. Got it on Friday, but I think there's a problem... The shutter does not open sometimes when the camera is switched on (the outer lens cover opens correctly, but I can see that the shutter is closed at the other side of the lens), so obviously there is darkness on the LCD and pictures are black when taken. This happens maybe half the time, usually when the camera is switched on, or just after taking a picture. Could this be a weird design feature I know about or do I have a faulty camera? Any advice is appreciated.

Where did you buy it from? An ebay store or seller? When it arrived did it appear "new"?

Hullo! I bought it from what appears to be a reputable ebay shop: http://myworld.ebay.ie/emilyandlily

It appeared to be all new, all the bits and pieces were sealed, the camera had its protective film on the LCD screen etc.

Bumpetty bump. Just said I'd follow up on this... the problem is still happening. Its infrequent but annoying! Any ideas on how it might be fixed before I go to the bother of returning to to Canon?

is there anything tin the manual to explain why this should be happening?

I'd contact Canon and ask them what to do there was a sensor problem with canon video cameras last year and there was a recall some sort of loose wire.
probably not related but a similar thing.
but basically your camera is not working so get on to them asap.

Nope, I've googled it, been through the troubleshooting guide etc. Thanks, I'll get onto them.
