A married couple went to the hospital to have their baby delivered. On arrival, the doctor said that he'd invented a machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labour pain to the father. It was still in the experimental stages, and he asked would they be willing to try it out.

They were both very much in favour of it, so the doctor set the transfer at 10% for starters, explaining that even 10% was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before. As the labour progressed, however, the husband felt fine, so he asked the doctor to bump it up a notch. The doctor adjusted the machine to a 20% pain transfer. After another couple of hours the husband still felt fine. The doctor checked his blood pressure and pulse and was amazed at how well he was doing, so they decided to try for 50%. The husband continued to feel quite well, and since it was obviously helping his wife considerably, he encouraged the doctor to transfer ALL of the pain to him.

Several hours later, the wife delivered a healthy baby boy with virtually no pain. She and the husband were ecstatic and they were allowed to leave the hospital that very evening.

When they arrived home, they found the milkman dead on their doorstep.
