Wetting the bed when drunk

    Hi there,

    Going un-reg for this one!

Bit embarressing really, last night and also last weekend I have woken up in the morning to find I've completely pissed the bed! And not just a little bit either but an absolute ton of it. Thing it isn't as I've done it, or just after; it's in the morning, I've totally slept through it!

I'm in my late 20's and this had happened about 4 times in the last year now, but never ever before that!

I don't understand it, It's not even being totally bladdered either, just 7/8 pints!

I've always kinda needed to wake up in the early morning to go for a piss, but that doesnt seem to be happening as much recently either.

Has anyone else ever done this? It's not a medical thing is it?

Least I've always been sleeping alone when it's happened, but it makes me pretty nervous about going back with a girl at the moment; could you imagine? Jesus!

    lol, I would not worry.
Happened to the best of us. It isn't a medical issue and I'd say it's happened to most people at some stage.

7/8 pints seems a lot to me but seems to be very little to you going by your post. That's your problem right there.

well alcohol is an anasthetic and a relaxant. so it means that the really urgent feeling you get when your bursting for a pee aren't as strong, and you don't feel it!so that's why you sleep right through it!just try to make sure you pee right before bed and maybe set an alarn clock ta like 4/5am to get you up to the jacks?

8 pints ... you might be asking for trouble. Still, consult your GP.

Not normal. Get it checked or cut down on the drinking.

Go see your dr this could be related to a number of issues.

I'm actually gonna agree with Thaedydal on this one, while 7-8 pints is a lot of alcohol to go through if you could usually handle it the bed wetting could be related to something else entirely.

Could be worse, at least you didn't mistake the wardrobe for the toilet.....

Also heard a story about from a guy who shared a bedroom with his brother.
Came home drunk one night and decided that the chair in the corner of
the bedroom was the pissing target for the night.

7/8 Pints is a good bit though, considering 3 pints or more is binge drinking. :D

    Doctor me arse....talk about scaremongering...

Happened to me for a while...just a phase

I was a bit stressed at the time....maybe you are too...cut down on the gargle a bit and have some food before going out, you'll be fine.

Hey, I've done it twice and I'm only 21.
Both times after a rake of pints.
Think about it, would you be able to drink 8 pints of water?
Of course your bodies gonna struggle with it, I wouldn't be too worried, just more concious of it.

If I drank 7 or 8 pints I'd need to be hospitalised. The same thing happened to my best friend when he was working as a bar man, they'd usually have a few pints (5 or 6) while cleaning up in the evenings, and he worked 4 nights a week. After a few months he'd wake up every few mornings and find he'd pissed himself. When we were at a house party one night, he fell asleep on the couch and pissed himself in front of a group of us, that was his wake-up call and he went to the doc. The doc said that if you binge drink regularly, over time things like this start to happen. My mate stopped drinking for 6 months and it all righted itself, hasn't happened to him since. Go to your doctor to make sure it's nothing more sinister, if you get the all clear, knock the booze on the head for a while and hopefully it'll get sorted.

Haha pisslips, what havn't you done.

I'd be concerned about it to be honest, when you're bladdered and can't remember anything about the previous night it's obvious that your brain function is impaired and can give rise to turning on the tap when you're not fully aware.

IIRC memory goes before subconscious functions (such as keeping the spincter muscle tight) so if you remember the night but still end up wetting the bed then I suggest you see a doctor.

In fact I suggest you see one anyways, just to be sure.

Happened to me once, but that was after alot of drink. I was very drunk. I can't imagine it happening to someone unless they'd had far too much to drink, how ever much that might be.

7 or 8 pints is a fair bit to drink but not a crazy amount. If you're an experienced drinker and used to having a few pints it shouldn't really be enough to make you so out of it that you can't even wake up to p1ss. Definitely wouldn't do any harm to consult a doctor, and maybe cut down on the beer for a bit.

Thats exactly my case, I was working in a bar four times a week and on my last night some fool left me on my own in the small bar.Slept for about 13 hours drowned my bed and a day latter got tiny red spots all over my eyelids.Stopped for a week and was back to normal.Mores the pity as it happened again about a month later.I never thought of myself as a heavy drinker though but when you do it 3 times a week for say 3 years with max 1 week break,I think it must have a negative effect.

i used to sleepwalk into a wrong convenient corner and leave a wet mess but that was cause i was drinking seven or eight pints curtail your drinking and things might be ok

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 888 ✭✭✭eclipsechaser

Simply put, if you're wetting the bed, it means you've had too much to drink. I know bed wetting can be a common issue with alcholics.

By the way, lest it need to be said, 7 or 8 pints is a lot! I would worry if you even semi-regularly take more than 10. That's a really dangerous road.

you're not a true man till you've done this a few times

happened me twice when i was 21. once after an all dayer. but once was 7/8 pints.
    never happened again.
    chalk it down to experience

A friend of mine tells a story of coming home from a late session, didn’t want to wake the wife so he ended up crashing in his son’s bed (about 4 year old).

Well, Dad wet the bed, but in the morning, blamed it on junior.

You need help. Wetting the bed at your age is bad.

I do that all the time.
My little Bruce is six and my wife still makes him wear nappies.

I have come home a few times are drink - not stociously drunk but reasonably merry, 6+ pints

I have a terrible habit of pissing on things in my room; first time I had just bought a new pc; was in my bedroom and I pissed on the desk, all over it; luckily there was no damage.

Second time I had just bought a whole load of new college books, couple of hundreds worth; were lying on the ground in the corner. Woke up and they were strangely damp =) always got some amusement when people asked me for lends of the books as they dried out alright.

I think it stems from the fact that there's a sink in one of the corners of my bedroom that I sometimes piss in when lazy; so when drunk I get a bit confused!

Make sure you take a piss before going to bed. If you don't piss yourself you can do damage to & possibly tear your bladder.

Also, 4 times recently but never previously. That's odd. I think it's gonna be hanging over ya until you tell a doc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

It's odd. I've never done this, even when absolutely ossified. Do you attempt to "hold it in" as long as you can when you're drinking? This can cause the sphincter to become weak and may result in this kind of thing. The mind wants to hold it in, but the body just can't. I would say that a normal piss regimen while drinking is to break the seal after two pints, then piss every 1-1.5 pints afterwards. If you're trying to push past this, you may be doing more harm then good.

A (female) friend of mine had a guy she was dating wet the bed (hers!) in similar circumstances.

Suffice to say that after the 2nd time it happened, the relationship was history. In fact, it only survived the first time 'cos she wasn't 100% certain what had happened. The 2nd time, she woke up while he was doing it - the flow was apparently quite loud and strong.

If you want to have a girlfriend again, I'd strongly suggest seeing a Dr now :D

Set an alarm to make yourself get up for a wee a couple of hours after you go to bed, you are probably too drunk to wake up naturally when you need the toilet. And maybe cut down a little, 7-8 pints is alot of alcohol.

Jesus Christ man! Can you not see that there's one common factor here? It's the amount that you're drinking.

I assume that you've never done this sober?

Regardless of whether you think 7/8 isn't that much it's obviously enough to make you wake up with a wet map of Africa in your bed.

I've had plenty of friends down through the years that have had similar experiences as yourself and some of the other posters, but personally, if that ever happened to me I'd give up drinking or at the very least cut back a bit.

Sorry Op but if I was with a man who wet the bed due to overuse of alcohol I could not stay with him. I remember a woman whose husband drank too much and constantly wet the bed, they had seperate beds and he needed a rubber sheet, to be honest I thought it was disgusting.

I have even known of people who defecate on themselves through drink, is it really worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,580 ✭✭✭✭Riesen_Meal

My mate does this all the time, and he doesnt really drink at all, even with the gf beside him in the bed, the doctor told him it was all stress related, and that the only way of stopping it is not to get worked up over things!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,229 ✭✭✭Susannahmia

My boyfriend has done it twice in the last 12 months, both times he was really really really drunk and sadly in my bed! Hes not a heavy drinker so these nights were exceptions. He wet the bed untill he was about 12 so I assume for him its the drink combined with a weak bladder.

I have my own theory though. When guys are asleep and need to pee they usually get a hard on and that stops them from peeing. When their drunk however, they are less likely to get one and wet the bed instead?

don't mind this person - they are over reacting.
admittedly constant wetting the bed is problematic but not after once or twice. save yourself the 60quid (wasted on a gp who'll tell you not to drink) and relax. It's an amusing story.
