Can anyone recommend a good tool dealer that would have quality spanners, sockets and the like, that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg? Basically, tool supply heaven.

Or should I just shop online and get stuff sent to my door?

    Cheers,
    Rich

Teng Tools and Snap-On tool are probably the best in the business, they all have lifetime warranties.

However, they are quite expensive, but they're worth it though.

They can be got from here:

Go for Snap-On if you can, the best by far.

I've used the majority of tool makes out there but Snappy is the best.

East Coast motor factors (Greenhills Road Industrial Estate, Tallaght, Dublin 24. Tel: 01-4521646) also sell some Teng Tools.

Draper Expert are also pretty decent tools at very affordable prices - make sure the "Expert" is included in the title, they are the better quality draper tools.

    Cheers for further leads.

I've had a large Halford's Professional socket set for some time. With one car in the UK and one here, some tools had to be taken over. I tried to get them posted back over but ParcelForce and GLS cocked-up and sent the package straight back without even attempting to delivery it.

If would be nice if the budget would stretch to Snap-On. For me the name carries far too much premium in the pricing.

Brands I've had in the toolbox that I've found to be good are (in no particular order):

Sykes Pickavant, Halfords Professional, Draper Expert, Elora, Franklin.

My personal favourites are Britool & King Dick.

I shall have a look at some Teng stuff and make my mind up.

    Halfords Professional.

, good for the ''handy andys'' but not a brand i'd buy for my day to day work.

    Snap-On FTW!

I know some of you will probably laugh at this, but I've bought some tools (sockets, hammers, a few spanners, etc.) from the pikies at autojumbles. They sell alot of stuff under the 'Rolson' brand name. Never had any problems with any of their tools.

That said, I wouldn't buy power tools from them!

    Ah haggling, gotta love it!

I've heard nightmare stories from people who bought power tools of them. My cousin bought a 110V power transformer from them a few years back, brought it home, plugged it in and nothing happened. He opened it up to discover two bricks inside of it for weight! Needless to say he wasn't impressed!

I got Rolson impact sockets of the local pikey - he calls around to the local garages - about 3 years ago, still going strong!
I did manage to split a co-workers snap-on socket, he was pissed!!

Got Brittool pry-bars as well - one of the best purchases ever, indestructible!

    Tucks here too.

Mostly because they have a huge catalog and the sales reps are more than helpful in ordering stuff in. They delivery times are great and returns are not an issue.

The prices are okay too. I know you can get cheaper, but the quality of the Tucks stuff is top notch. My dad, an ex-mechanic, has used them all his life. I still use some of his 20 year old spanners and wrenches. He still uses them for tools and machinery (drills, bits, power washers)

    ''Hot bed'' Meaning alot of.

To be honest i dont really know, i've only ever bought a spline set up there.

But as for the heavy machinery up there they do have a certain look about them, but the Gardai are always up there and i've never seen any people being arrested or questioned about what they are selling.

I succumbed to my cheapskate tendencies and went to Lidl this morning.

Picked up a "Powerfix" (s+k action) 90 piece (metric) tool set for €50. Ratchet is a little rough, but as a set to keep me going (and one to leave in the boot for the roadside repairs) it isn't that bad. I've seen a lot, lot worse. Interesting to note it has a 14mm 1/4" drive socket in the set which is a size I've always found handy on motorcycles and not often found, not even in the jumbo 150 piece Halfords Pro set (their is one in their Pro 1/4" drive set). The other thing is the sockets are all 6 point side drives.

The other thing that looked useful to me was the 60 LED strip lamp. So I bagged one of those for €18. Rechargable (approx 5-6h charge) Running time (approx 2.5). 3 year guarantee.

Premium tools will once again be purchased after this momentary lapse. :)
