blueface and Nokia N80?

I recently got my hands on a 3 Skypephone, which is alright but not good enough to switch to 3 for, and it got me thinking about the SIP settings on my N80.

If I were to get the freedom basic package with a company like Blueface, for example, would I be able to make VoIP calls from my mobile (assuming I was in a wifi zone)? In other words is blueface compatible with SIP and is it easy to set up?

It would be tempting as I could then make cheap (or even free calls) from my mobile assuming I was at home and could also have a dedicated landline number for work etc.

Any thoughts? Oh; and can you make calls to skype from Blueface and are they free or is it only Skype-Skype and Blueface-Blueface that's free?

You can ideed use Blueface on your N80 in wifi hotspots and it works very well - not so good over 3G - I'm assuming your N80 is unbranded - not a Three model - mine is factory unlocked so I never had to deal with branding issues that locked out functionality.

While Blueface use the open SIP protocol, Skype uses it's own proprietory (and closed) one so making one talk to the other requires some sort of gateway to translate between the two. It's possible but not simple.

One thing I have found on my N80 is that using the SIP client really sucks up battery which is less than stunning in the N80 anyway. You can run the Three Skype client on the N80 and it seems a good deal easier on the battery but you don't have text chat.

An alternative to get Skype on your N80 is Fring - works great with Skype, MSN, GTalk and ICQ for both text and voice and it's free from www.fring.com but you will need an X-Series Gold addon with Three to use it outside of a wifi area. It has the distinct advantage on the N80 of not being a battery hog.

Thanks for that Bluefrog, very interesting.

I indeed have an unbranded N80 and am using O2 on it at the moment... not sure if I've even got 3G set up on it properly and I'd imagine using 3G to make SIP calls on any network would be expensive (probably more expensive than a straight forward call!)

Figured it would be a battery hog too - the N80's battery is pretty poor as you say and it tends to get drained just from using the FM radio for too long.

Thanks again anyway, trying to decide if I should get blueface or not and seeing what I could do with it if I did!

Haven't checked in quite a while but Blueface used to let you trial their service and give you a euro to play with to see how it works out for you.
