Iceland

I'm thinking of going to Iceland this June for a few days. Just have a few questions for anyone who's been there:

    1. Is four or five days enough to spend there? I have up to 7 days free but know it will be very expensive so may spend a couple less days there.

    2. We'll be flying into Reykjavik and probably be based there. Is it best to stay in the capital for the stay and do day trips, or to travel around and spend some nights elsewhere?

    3. I've looked into some tours, such as the Golden Circle. Can anyone recommend any other tours that are worth doing? Or is it best to rent a car and see the sights ourselves? I hear car hire and petrol costs are huge there.

    Any advice appreciated

Firstly, do a search on this forum and you will find answers to similar questions have been posted several times last year alone !!!

Depends on what you want to do. You can see in / around Reykjavik in 4/5 days. But if you want to explore other parts of the country then you will need much much more time. The country may look small, but given road conditions (and low speed limits) it is more difficult to drive long distances than you may initially think.
Personally I don’t think its that expensive – go out to dinner in Dublin and see the bill . If you are careful with eating out and don’t drink too much its ok. Car hire is expensive, but you need one.

Actually you will be flying to Keflavik (as Reykjavik is a domestic airport). For such a short trip, yes stay in Reykjavik.

Unless you are travelling solo don’t do organised tours, they cost a fortune and even then a car is a better idea. I think visiting Iceland and not hiring a car is daft. It’s the only way to see the country. There are no trains; public busses between towns is poor; and organised tours cost way to much. Eg. for the price of 1 days car hire is about the same, maybe cheaper than 2 persons for a ½ day Golden Circle tour.

Petrol is about ISK120 (Eur 1.30) per litre at the moment – cheapest in self-service. Car hire varies greatly depending on time of year. In high season expect to pay about Eur 100 per day inc all taxes and insurance for a small car (say a Toyota Yaris). You don’t need a 4x4 unless you plan to go seriously off road (and you know how to handle Icelandic off-road driving). A regular car on the unpaved roads (places like the Reykjanes) is fine.
