How to stop snoring

Won’t go into detail as there is no point but does anyone have any ways of reducing or stopping snoring altogether? I am asthmatic which I feel also contributes to my bad snoring as I tend to breath very heavy anyways.

Just wondering if someone had a problem with snoring and they were able to get it sorted? If so how did you go about it?……

Sorry if this seems more like a medical question, its not…… Mods, feel free to delete is you think it is!

There are sleep clinics around the country that you can go to if you want to go to such lengths. There's a sleeping and dreaming forum in here that have links to sleep clinics and give advise so have a look in there!

Theres bands you can get that fit over your nose as well. check the pharmacy. also if you can get comfortable sleeping on your stomach that will help.

lose weight, reduce alcohol intake, stop smoking (provided you do all these things). There's also a pretty good "anti-snore" spray (Boots) that works.

    This worked for the boyfriend...

I’m defiently not over weight, I don’t smoke and to be fair we all sound disgusting when we have a few drinks of us. LOL

But I have noticed (or at least other people have) that my snoring is worse after being out on the piss.

Must check this spray out! Thanks!

Yeah, I've heard of people having success with the "breath right" strips which open up your nasal passages.

Sleeping on your side or your front also helps as you tend to snore loudest on your back.

well I sometimes snore so bad I wake myself up :D

Do you drink a lot of milk ? (a lot being more than 1 pint/day)
I find if you cut all dairy out of your diet it can help. It was recommended to me many years ago and it did work, but I love the stuff so I relapse often.

If the other things don't work you may have a deviated septum. Mine was caused by taking elbows to the nose playing sport. It never broke but inside it was mashed to crap and was all over the place. I literally couldn't breathe properly through my nose hence the snoring. So I had to get it straightened (2002) and it really helped. Getting a bit worse again probably because I have taken a few blows to the nose in the last while.

mace or pepper spray to the face should do the job...

well, my friend had a bad snoring problem, it was due to something in his nose the glands afaik. He got them removed by the doc and he never snores again.

you may not have the same thingm do you suffer from asthma, if you less dairy products and make sure you are in a dust free room.

Do ye snore on your back, or your side? If only on your back, sew a tennis ball into the back of a t-shirt, and sleep in said t-shirt. Every time you lie on your back, the ball will dig into your back, and you'll go back on your side. After a while, you may no longer sleep on your back.

I have a question for JDivision (or anyone who knows) regarding surgery to repair a deviated septum.

I've been considering getting my deviate septum corrected and I was
wondering how smooth the surgery was and how the recovery time
was, etc. JDivision - perhaps PM me as I'm just interested to know
from someone whose had that correction procedure done what to
expect, etc. I'll of course visit my doctor or ENT specialist to get
more detailed answers but just curious to hear how the op typically
    goes.

I'll post it here just in case others have it. I went into Tallaght hospital, stayed overnight and then had the surgery, stayed that night and night afterwards and released the next morning. It was covered by my VHI policy. Surgery was grand, you're knocked out, but obviously I was a bit grumpy that evening.

It certainly made a big difference but I think I may have to go back to get it looked at again - I've started snoring quite badly again apparently and know I took a bad elbow to the nose so that may be the reason. You'll be referred to a consultant by the GP (or at least I was) and it cost e10 a minute (!!!) for the consultation. He knew straight away it was mashed up inside - he couldn't get the light up very far!!

    Hey JDivision !

Thanks for the super quick reply and reassuring info.
I think I'll book a consultation at some point soon.

you should try the buteyko method, worked wonders for me especially with my snoring. it basically teaches you to breathe through your nose the whole time (sounds easy!). at night they encourage you to tape up your mouth and sleep on your side as if you sleep on your back your lower jaw automatically opens.

There's a spray called silence which is available in chemists which seems to be working for me (at least my girlfriend is managing to sleep at nights now!).

    Hi,

Just my tuppence worth. The OTC spray worked for me for about two weeks and then one night it stopped working, not worth the 18.00!!

I've been reading up a lot on snoring and it's not as straight forward as you'd think. There is a test on brittishsnoring.co.uk that will help you determine where you snore from.

For some reason I even snore on my side. I've tried strips, sleeping on my belly, with two pillows nothing is working. Im also with a healthy bmi and I don't smoke. It's really starting to upset me never mind causing havoc with the boyfriend. It's getting embarrising now.. even my snorting piggy snore are waking me up..
