    Hey guys,

Going on my first J1 and want to go to either Hawaii(Maui) or California(anywhere) I was wondering if anyone had any tips, i heard hawaii is very expensive and hard to get jobs. Becoz of the distance id want to be confident about the place before booking. I would be delighted to hear from you guys :)

Hawaii is expensive and hard to get a job. the locals also dislike mainland white people. i've had plenty of experience with hawaiians. I'd go to Cali as you have more options surrounding you.

heya, i'm booked for Maui. From what I've heard, getting a job isn't atrociously hard, but accommodation is hard to come by. I'm gonna start looking for jobs and accom. soon to avoid hassle when i'm there, aparently once you're sorted before you leave it's grand once youre there.

Oh no :( I cant afford to spend a bomb either.. Have you travelled much over there? I just want to get a job and have enough for rent and food and for spending on the way home in LA on clothes!

nope, ive never been. this is my first j1 too :) i know a girl who went to maui last year, she said it was expensive but then again so is california. she said she had the most amazing summer ever! if it's cheapness you're after california is meant to be just as dear!

we're stopping in LA on the way over, and NYC on the way back. we're gonna be so poor in NYC!!!

the social scene in Maui is meant to be very steered towards beach parties so you wont be spending loads on drink in clubs.

i've lived in San Diego for 4 years and on Hawaii for 5 months. There is a difference in cost of living on both. Hawaii is overall expensive. You will feel the pinch, especially when paying for accommodation and food. and i'd recommend a car when there as its a difficult place to get around without one and you will spend a fortune on taxis. probably more than the price of renting a car a day.

The Irish i talked to while there said it was hard to get a job and the ones that did get jobs didn't like them. a of people i met abandoned hope of a job and chilled out for a few weeks and they headed to California or elsewhere. There is good craic to be had on Hawaii but you would nearly wanna make sure you have a job and a place to stay before going so its not ruined by financial worry.

yeah that's what i was thinking. i'm gonna try and sort myself out with a job and a place before I leave, I'm gonna get cracking on it next month to be sure. I just figured, i've always wanted to go to hawaii, what better chance?! i generally prefer parties anyway so i like the idea of beath parties and house parties.
