Training goals 2008!

Right, I think it was Millionaire started this thread last year and I thought it was a pretty good idea so ill start it off this year.

Firstly, did people stick to their resolutions last year?

Secondly, what are their resolutions for 2008?

    1) Last year I made a resolution to move my training up from 4 to 5 days a week of training and have been succesful in completing that one. My diet has had to improve hugely to accomplish it and its amazing how much you can miss that one extra days rest. I also resolved to fight pro MMA over the Summer and was able to do that also. 2007 brought a couple of milestones that i didnt expect to make by fighting amatuer Thai Boxing. Overall its been a good years training!

    2) This year aims will be a little more numerous but im hoping not too much so that it becomes mission impossible! Firslty i want to put a whole lot more wrestling into my training. Good wrestling really is becoming a must have in MMA and from my training out in the States in the last three months ive realised how much it really determines the direction of a fight. Ive gone from having a top game to being on my back 90% of the time out here! Its crazy how well the college wrestlers adapt to Jits after only a couple of months training. They really understand the physics of fighting.

Secondly ill be lookin to put a sixth training session into my week so i can work that wrestling i was on about. This will be dependent on me keeping my next resolution which is going 100% Paleo (money permitting!). I came to it as very skeptical but i have to say its made a world of difference to my training. Id advise everybody to give it a go.

Thirdly, id like to fight pro Thai Boxing. They just banned MMA out in Melbourne (my next destination) so ill be lookin to keep out the ring rust with a couple of Thai scraps.

Fourthy, Ill be hopin to throw a bit of crossfit style conditioning in there somewhere two.

My spelling is awful so apologies to any spelling nazis/English teachers out there!

It's funny how the goal posts move a little as the year progresses. I tend to spend too much time thinking/writing/waffling about training than actually training, especially recently. I thought last year that one should be at least blue belt standard in BJJ before considering a MMA fight regardless of your skills in other ranges, now I think you should be purple belt standard. Other times I think you're better off just getting out and giving it a go and improving/learning that way.

Good man crokester. Was wondering when this thread would be started. For anyone who wants to know what goals they set themselves, gerry's 2007 thread is here.

    Here's what I said:

    Great thread Gerry.

I aim to keep doing 2 classes of MT a week and 3 hours of bag time a week at home (got the bag up today. Delighted.).

I'm aiming for as close to a paleo diet as real life allows.

My wife's expecting a baby any day now so keeping those two in place for the next six months will be enough I think. :)

Oh...I'd like to be able to do a headstand push up. I tried a couple of weeks ago...not a feckin' hope. :)

Well...after the baby was born I took about 2 months off. Found it really hard to get back into it after that, but I did, and then progressed nicely throughout the year. Easily averaged 2 classes a week by upping it to 3-4 a week in the 2nd half of the year. I'm in the fighters class now and looking forward to my first fight.

On diet: I learned a lot throughout the year. Decided that Paleo's a bit OTT personally, but I like the general jist of it so I eat a lot more veg and a good bit of lean meat, but I'll still have muesli in the morning (which would be verbotten under Paleo).

Overall I'm more than happy with my progress throughout 2007....here are my goals for 2008:

Get my first MT fight in (hopefully one of several this year).
Travel to Thailand for 3 weeks solid training and come back in the best shape of my life (this is a bit inevitable, the flight is booked).
Never stop training for more than 2 days for any reason (this one covers a multitude, so I'm going to leave it at that).

Think I'll set the modest goal of just trying to stay injury free this year. 2007 wasn't good for me in that regard!

Just saw one of your vids on youtube there crokester. Some very nice MT style knees in there. Good fight to watch.

Is that you shouting away in the background there RedRaven? (link) (actually....I see you in the corner at the end of the first round...you've a very distinctive voice. Are you teaching striking in Spartan or something?)

Havo: I'm one of the lads who'll be fighting in Manchester. Are you coming? RedRaven, are you?

Yes Khan that was me shouting, it felt weird to honest because the crowd was not very loud its different at a Thai show a lot louder, at an MMA there is no music you can be heard very clearly, I dont think my voice is that distinctive is it???

Kev is one of my students from UCD,he asked me to do corner for him with Colm, he did very well in that fight.

I have been offered the role to help the lads in Spartan with Thai, some thing which Im sure I will do in the future.

Yes I might try and head to Liverpool, I think I will be judging at the show if I do make it.

Cheers Wayne n Brian. Got a good bit of thai in in NY in a place called Sitan Gym out in Queens. Most of the Thai in NY is pretty poor with alot of Tai Bo and arobics stuff in there claiming to MT. I was disapointed to find out that it was the same quality in Fairtex in San Fransisco. Ive been warned about Fairtex before though!

Anyway in wanna hear some more resolutions from the rest of ye lot!

    My resolutions:

Have a look at the Paleo diet & a general improvement.
Echoing Khannies point - Never stop training for more than 2 days in a row.
Lose unneccessary body fat & Increase muscle
Start going on Jogs outside of training.

Well lost almost every fight last year!, I'd huge issue's in my personal life playing havoc with training and my head so things went a little sideways.

This year I'd good plans, everything mapped out and then the simplest of things happened..

I slept wrong last week, woke up with a stiff neck. Over the next few days I noticed some numbness in my right hand.

WEnt to the doctor, X-rays etc and I'd a trapped radial nerve in my neck which is causing the numbess.

I'm on anti-inflam's for four weeks, no training, can't pick my nose!!!.

Everything is on hold for the next while, oh Doc says it can take a long time for these things to resolve themselves.

Training goal for the next while, cardio-cardio-cardio. As I can't feel much of my right hand I risk injury by training M.A.

    Unlucky Mairt. :(

Yeah, maybe not. Could be the lack of crowd noise. I'm probably familiar with your voice from the announcing at the ringside club fights.

MT is a bit of a victem of its own success out here man. Theres some real muck being paraded as MT! The place I was in in Queens was pretty good but it was one of the few. Most places for example have a "sparring class", the one class of the week where they spar. Most of the gyms have rich business men and women filling their coffers so their slow to make the classes more fighter orientated. Alot of the gyms ur just renting a bag for an hour or so. No real guidance from a coach. Most places you can tell the standerd of training ul get by the standerd of the facilities. As one goes up the other goes down! If there are showers...ur f*cked!

Get the weight back off that i lost in thailand.
Get that 3rd class into the week in bridgestone.
Figure out if i still want to do the tma that im doing.
    Improve my grappling in bjj.
Figure out the proper way to put on a thai cup!
    Faster hands.

Hey Mairt, how are you doing now with the radial nerve thing? I'm suffering from a trapped radial nerve myself according to my physio (pain down my shoulder and arm) and wondering how long it takes to dissepate?

    Ardent, Mairt,

Can give you the name of a good osteopath who works north / side of Dublin if you PM me.

I would,nt be putting extra strain on your bodies by training with this problem.
