Capitalising 'Mac'

Random thought: why do so many people feel the need to talk about 'MACs'? I mean, I know Macs are wonderful and all, but do they really need to be capitalised? Maybe these people are trying to convey their enthusiasm by shouting the name from the rooftops? Or is it an acronym for 'more advanced computer' or some such term?

Seriously though, I know this is weird and random, but I was just wondering is there some historical reason for it, or are people confusing it with MAC addresses or what? Anyone know?

It's because they are either shouting with glee or screaming in contempt... depending which side of the fence they sit on...

lol, every time I post in this forum I'm tempted to create this topic:) I have no idea, it's not like MAC (urgh) is an acronym for anything.

Oriel will love this thread, its his pet hate, he loves correctly people on it.

I hate when people do it myself, but I guess I have to take the more tolerant line in "my role" here anyway.

He he, I knew i wouldn't be the only one who this bugged :) Been tempted to post it for quite a while. Never seen Oriel go mad about it though I can picture it alright. Never seen him agree with 440Hz on something either - wow, this really was worth posting ;)

I don't recall seeing it capitalised that much. Maybe they see PC and think MAC?

Do a search on the main page for 'IE 7 on a MAC'. Do it now :p

Perhaps it actually stands for Microsoft Annoying Computers?

    Sorry, I will go now.

I like my Mac but not more than my family and I dont go around talking about my BROTHER.

MAC = Media Access Control address, the unique address of network cards

    MAC ≠ sexy computers!

Yeah, i know what you mean and i was worried about this. Worried for myself.
Maybe this will explain. Well me, anyway

1)- i am 1 year and 1 month using mac after spending 9 horrible years using windows. I am still happy i jumped to mac.
    2) - maybe the apple logo on my imac does something to my brain when i see it.
3)- Because i am new to mac i have been coming in here everyday to learn by reading post. In fact it is just pure instinct now to come to the mac forum in here.
4)- my brother in law said to me ( after i said mac was so much easier to learn and understand) " if you put all that effort into learning windows you would feel the same about windows" -- maybe he is right but mac just seems more fun and it does not seem like school.

One thing of interest -- if we say for example that 90% of computers are windows and 5% are mac users, how in god's name can there be 17 people viewing the mac forums and only 5 viewing the windows forum ????? and that is nearly the same figure ( give or take ) everyday. HOW??????

I think the little apple logo on your computers in controlling our minds. We are Zombies or Macombies.

When you think about it been a mac person in boards makes us all friends. Maybe that is another reason. We feel we are all friends, the apple logo holds us together like a Borg ( star trek) thing or something like that. Maybe we are mac-orgs.

Well this forum covers Mac hardware, software and Apple products in general. Where as the Windows forum is specifically for discussion of the OS. PC discussion is spread throughout the Tech forums.

How about we try something. Lets say we all stay away from here until mac world starts. Someone will have to stay to answer serious questions though.
See if we can do it. We will see are we brainwashed or not.

^ no offence triple h but what has any of that got to do with the incorrect capitalisation of the word mac? Being brainwashed=/= posting in a forum about your hobbies.

'iTouch' actually does annoy me a good bit too, I've even seen these mysterious objects being advertised in the print media by a large electronics company. I've also heard at least one person talking about how Apple don't make iPods anymore, they've been replaced by 'iTouches'. Hmm, maybe MAC make the iTouch actually...

I like the picture of the mirror Gordon the super mod. very funny. all it needs now is the apple logo sticker on it.

BanzaiBK --- your best to ignore me sometimes i tend to rant on a bit. But after saying that we are the ground soldiers, maybe we are to blame.

Take a look around Boards and you'll find loads of examples. Though admittedly it's usually on Digg and places where people are ranting.

When I worked for O2 we were warned we would need to educate customers iMode (and indeed, iMail) had nothing to do with Apple.

The amount of people (including YORE MA, Monkeyfudge) that came in asking if it was "made by Apple /MAC/ ipod" was immense, and the names where interchangable. Where Im going with this is maybe the MAC thing comes down to the power of advertising?

Possibly, although I haven't actually seen it capitalised in an ad (yet). I wonder what these people would make of BBC's iPlayer not working on their MAC?

I see their problem. It only works on an iMAC pro.

Neither have I, I wonder what they look like? More importantly, can IPODS run on them, and if they do, can you only play the music you buy on the IPOD WEBSITE?

It's spelt Micro$oft (which also annoys me actually, it only fans the flames against the MAC).

On a similar note, these same people find it hard to believe something called a "creative zen" is very similar to an IPOD. I assume these are the same people who call cola coke, crisps tayto etc...

But go on admit, you all call vacuum cleaners hoover. :)

TBH I actually give out about iPods on a fairly regular basis. Would I buy one again? Yes, because the problems I've had are small (e.g. freezing when I plug it into the computer and it needing to be reset, which takes a few seconds) and they work well with the Mac and iTunes. But I think Apple could have put a bit more care into them, they don't seem to be as well put together as a Mac.

On the other hand I'm using a 5G, maybe the new ones are better.

I frequently hear people in Smyths asking the staff which is better, an iPod or an MP3 player?

And "MAC" users wonder why people think they're snobby clueless retards.

The OS X thread and this is really surprised me.

When a handy bopper OS X user or Windows user makes the wonder over to one of the many Linux "distro's" they continue to use the word "linux" as an OS when Linux is a kernel not an OS for sometime we constantly corrected these people as they were obviously the scum of the earth and as we had little else to complain about we corrected them ever single time.

At some point you have to ignore it and realise even tho Linux is not an operating system but is just a given now that the person is talking about an OS and not a single kernel.

Otherwise you spend half your life correcting it or creating a thread like "why when a dumb ass MAC/Windows user makes the change to _insert_linux_distro_ do they constantly call it "Linux" "

Or making up jokes about make up an calling it a thread on computers after it has turned into a discussion on SOFTWARE and your pedantic pants end up pulled over your face and your left with your arse hanging out and a girly looking laptop.

at the end of the day
any linux distro is still linux

    (crap)
